Montana/Glacier

Planning a trip later this summer to Idaho, Montana/Glacier. I've heard it is beautiful and am looking forward to the trip. I was looking for some information on the Going to the Sun Road. I hear it can be scary. Was also told if you drive it from east to west you would be on the inside lane, making it a bit more comfortable to drive. Any truth to that?

We also plan to drive US 93 in Montana, but heard it was a dangerous highway. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on that.

Am interest in any suggestions any one has regarding the best sites and drives in Montana/Glacier.

Thanks!

It's been a long time since I've done the whole Going to the Sun Road, but I think your right. You will be on the inside if you go from east to west. I never thought Hwy 93 to be dangerous. As with any highway, just take you time.

Waterton National Park in Canada is beautiful too. We enjoyed the Chief Mountain Highway 17 going to Waterton.

You really should drive the road going in both directions. Believe it or not, you get a different view of the scenery each way. There are things you can't see because you would have to look backwards to see it.

The road is a little scary but mostly you are so awed by the scenery. Just take your time like everybody else. No one will expect you to drive fast.

Waterton is a great little town to visit.

Where else in Montana are you planning to visit?

the Sun Road is a stunning drive scenically. I don't think the road itself is at all scary. However, rain and fog can make change the picture, as they can any road. In that case, don't go if you have concerns, because it is tight, full of curves, and full of vehicles.

On the other hand, it is not as dangerous as your normal Interstate highway with people switching lanes at 90mph.

I have driven it both ways, and I agree that it does not look the same. I will be driving it, I hope, in two weeks!!

Right now, I am hoping it is open by July 1. This looks like the year of the latest opening on record. Crews are just now working on the Big Drift. Logan Pass has been reached but the drift on the east side is the obstacle now. It will be cleared in a few days, but whether or not it will be open by June 29 is problematical.

Montana US 93 south of Kalispell is not my favorite road. It can be slow driving, businesses intrude up to the pavement, and it is crooked. North of Whitefish, it is in the trees, but still narrow and not very straight.
But, you don't have many choices!!
I just take it in stride, drive defensively, and keep going.
