Nantucket / Martha's Vineyard / Block Island

We are spending one night on each island in July. I'm having trouble with 2 night minimums, and everywhere looks so lovely, any suggestions? We are from Australia and can't extend our trip. Thanks muchly

I think you will be advised to stay only on one island to get the best of your trip but you will regret not seeing all of them.
We stayed one year 2 nights in Falmouth & took boat over to MV for the day.
Last time we stayed in Hyannis where you can get boat to both places. We did a day trip to Nantucket from Hyannis & also a day trip to MV after driving to Falmouth. I would recommend MV but both places are fantastic.

Block Island can be a day trip. I would urge you to pick one of the others and spend two nights. I live on Nantucket and of course recommend us, but Martha's Vineyard is also interesting. You will need a car on the Vineyard because the points of interest are quite spread out. Nantucket has convenient public buses going to the beaches and the sites, generally running from mid-May to early October.

If you have more specific questions about Nantucket, please post them. There are lots of Nantucket enthusiasts here and most of them know more about hotels and guest houses than I do, since I live in my own house!! But I do know about restaruants, beaches, attractions, and especially ferries back and forth.

If anyone can offer any suggestion of anywhere that would allow single night bookings on any of the three islands that would be wonderful. This seems to be my major hurdle.

Lissa

are you and mlb the same poster?

Unless you are jet setters and money is no object, I really don't see how and why you would try to see these three islands one day each consecutively. If you have a cesna or a private yacht, that is another story.

Hi, yes, we are the same, sorry, one was from home and the other from work (long story). Definately not jet setters...
I'm beginning to see the foolishness of my original plan, I'm wondering though about staying 2 nights on MV and doing a day trip to Nantucket. That might work. I found reasonable prices at 1720 house on MV, seems to have okay reviews, any opinions?

Well, unless you can get a private charter, I think the only doable way is to go from Hyannis and ferry to the vineyard and back and then grab a ferry to nantucket and back. Unless you can get an affordable flight, but last time I investigated this very thing.....it just wasn't that doable.

I have no idea what your itenery is. If you have a car rental, where you are traveling from, and where are you headed to?

Perhaps choosing 2 nights on either island and then a night on the lower cape would be nice. Provincetown is very 'eclectic' with great writers artists and a diverse community, and the surrounding seashore is breathtaking.

Truthfully, I would choose either one of the 3 islands and explore it and walk away with a true feel of it, rather than a hit and run trip. Australia is a long way to come and not take your time to get an islands feel.

Thanks gyppielou, we are catching the ferry from Boston to Provincetown, then a coach / bus to Hyannis for the ferry. I have found cheap flights from MV across to Nantucket and the inter-island ferry to come back. This is as we are heading back to NYC after going to DC, Niagara Falls and Boston.
It seems doable, I'd just love some input on 1720 House if anyone knows of it. Reviews seem to be a bit both ways, but it's pretty much all there is. Thank you again.

Hi, we ahve not been to the 1720 House so I will not commentg on that but our family has vacationed on Martha's Vineyard numerous times and we have a blog with our tips and stories and pictures if that might interest you. I'm not sure about policies on Fodors with links so I have it in my signature.

Hmmm... If I only had 2.5 hours on nantucket (because I don't want to miss it) and I hired a double moped... what would you recommend I do please? THanks, Lissa
