Napa/Sonoma or Big Sur/Carmel/Monterey

Help! We have 4 days and 3 nights before we go to San Francisco....should we spend it in Napa/Sonoma or Big Sur area? Or could we fit it all in???

Thanks!

you can certainly fit both in IF you plan on overnighting - one night in Carmel/Monterey and one night in Sonoma/Napa. It's too much to drive all the way to Napa/Monterey and then turn around and return to San Francisco. You'll have a much more enjoyable trip if you didn't have to dash back just to get back to a San Francisco hotel for the night.

A lot of the hotels have 2 night minimum stays in Carmel, especially on the weekends. We were able to get a one night stay on a Fri. night at the Tickle Pink Inn, I made reservations about a month in advance. When are you traveling? ***kim***

Figure at least 3 hours driving from Healdsburg in Sonoma County to Carmel. San Francisco is about half way between the two towns. You might be able to do a one night stay if you check out VRBO... owner vacation rentals in each area. Mid week is also easier than a weekend. But if its a last minute booking they may take it rather than have a vacant room.

I think the most imporant question is - what do you like to do and what are your hopes for this part of the trip? That will help answer the either/or or both question.

We really want to see the Redwoods and enjoy the scenery, as well as taste some great wine...

If you stay near Monterey, go to Watsonville for dinner at Tepa-Suhuayo - it looks like a hole in the wall but wow fantastic authentic Mexican. I will always remember the saffron shrimp...

We're thinking of going straight to Sonoma when we fly in on Weds and then spending the night there...that gives us all day Weds to go to wineries. Then on Thurs we can go to a winery and then Muir Woods and drive to Big Sur/Carmel/Monterey. We'll stay there two nights - what would be the best romantic hotel/B&B for under $200/night?
