Nashville in October

We will be staying in a timeshare in October. We
are both competitive photographers and would
appreciate some suggestions of places to take
pictures. In addition to great scenery, we also
compete in the nature category in our camera club, which includes wildlife and flowers. We will
be coming from the Boston area and renting a car
when we arrive. Our second week will be in
northwest South Carolina, so we would like
information about there, as well. Any suggestions
would be very helpful, as we have never been to
this area.

There are two areas that immediately come to mind: (1) Percy Priest Lake and (2) Percy Warner Park. Both provide nature and wonderful hiking trails to boot.

The Cumberland River might also provide nature/city/humanity pictures. That's the river that runs downtown.

Don't forget about the Vanderbilt campus; it usually has beautiful flowers and gorgeous buildings. Across the street is the rendition of Parthenon.

Nashville is a wonderful place. Please enjoy

thanks for the information. We will certainly visit some of those places. We like to walk, but not on strenuous trails. Are those that you mentioned easy level? How far are the
Smokies?

The Smokies are about a 4 hour drive from Nashville. All interstate to Knoxville then US129 to US321 to the park. This will take you to Gatlinburg but you can turn off to Cades Cove along the way. If you are not camping, Townsend would be closest area to this point without going all the the to Gatlinburg. The road through the park US441 runs for 35 miles and comes out in Cherokee. Just before getting into town pass turn off for the start of the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you want to return to Nashville via a much more scenic but longer route take US19/74 which will take you past Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest,(about 30 min off main road) through the Nantahala and Ocoee gorges (site of summer Olympics) both good for shots of whitewater rafters. To I-24 to Chattanooga and back to Nashville. If you want to take a side trip, from Chattanooga it is 2 hrs to Huntsville, AL which is home of Space Camp and the worlds largest space museum (they claim). Off I-24W near Manchester is turn off to Jack Daniels and Jim Beam distillerys (free tours)about 30 min off interstate. In Nashville is Raynor Lake which I hear is very scenic.

The information was very helpful, especially Photodog. I am attempting to print it out so that we can bring it with us. Anyone familiar with the northwest corner of South Carolina?
