How about Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach? Across the street from the beach with a pedestrian bridge, has spa and fitness center and pool. Newport probably has less hotels directly on or across from the beach.

Were you hoping to swim in the ocean? https://www.nodc.noaa.gov/dsdt/cwtg/spac.html
If you just want to sit in a beach chair and admire the ocean, go for it if the air temp is warm enough.

Depending on how close to the beach you want to be and what your budget is, you can look at the Resort at Pelican Hill and Marriott Newport Coast Villas.
If you're willing to go as far south as Laguna Beach, there are several resorts on the beach. Surf & Sand, Ritz-Carlton, Montage...
If you're flying into LAX or driving from the north, you could save some drive time and look at Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes.

I would go with one of Jean's recs in Laguna Beach. Laguna's beaches, downtown and area are much more beautiful than Huntington Beach. Laguna Beach is one of the loveliest beach towns in southern California. Huntington Beach is not lovely (IMHO).
