Need a day trip while in Atlantic City.
Fodorites - four of us will be in Atlantic City for 3 nights and four days (October 10th through 13th). The first two days are taken care of and we'll check out of the hotel at 10 am on Friday. We don't fly out until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Any idea where to go for most of Friday and part of Saturday? Is Cape May a place that 'pulls in the sidewalks' after Labor day? Or are the shops and sites still open? I am a little confused about the area. I have read about a ferry, which to me means Cape May is an island, but I have also read about driving. I have looked online at B&B's and most require a two night stay, and of course we only need a Friday night stay. Any suggestions? If you like some place better than Cape May, just let me know. I have been known to plan an entire trip based on comments on Fodor's and I have never been disappointed yet! Thanks.

Cape May is on the NJ coast. There is a ferry from Delaware, but you won't need to worry about that. I'd think Cape May would be beautiful that time of year, and arguably you could for the day and evening, and come back to Atlantic City.

October is prime birdwatching time in Cape May so that might be why you are getting the two night minimun. What type of activites are you looking for? Do you want the beach? If not I'd go to NYC or Philadelphia.

It all depends on what airport you are flying out of? If you are contemplating a one night stay in cape May then I would assume it is AC airport? Or is it PHL? If it is PHL then a day in PHL would be great and so much to see. Cape May is popular year round. It is great for little shops, food, etc. I am surprised in October they still require a 2 night stay. There are other hotels in Cape May that might differ. Try www.capemay.com and search other options then the B&B's.

Thank you for the replies I have received so far. We are flying out of AC airport and are looking for the quaintness that Cape May seems to offer. I appreciated the suggestion to do Cape May during the day and drive back to AC for the nights stay if we have difficulty finding a place for only one evening. We are four really flexible people - especially on a vacation - pure relaxation - no stress!
