Need hotel suggestion near Hearst Castle
We will be coming from Yosemite, and will be heading for San Francisco after touring the castle. San Simeon or Cambria seem like the most likely towns. Comfortable bed and pool are the most important factors. We'll want to rest after being in the car for that long of a time. On the beach would be great, oh yeah, under $100 would be great too!
Any recommendations?
Thanks all!

Hello !
My reccomendation for staying in Cambria is the San Simeon Pines Seaside resort. They sit on 8 acres, away from the other hotels on moonstone beach. While this place does not have a direct view of the ocean, it is just a short walk across the road and onto a trail, which takes you to the ocean and then connects with the lakewalk.
They also have activities: 9 hole golf course, shuffleboard and croquet. They do have a pool, which seemed warm (we didnt use because my 14 yr old decided to swim in the ocean), no hot tub.
The beds were on the hard side, which my mom loved and I slept pretty good also. Just depends on what you like in a bed.
We were just there on June 21. I absolutely loved this place. Landscaping was pretty. Family rooms are in the middle with adult sections on the ends (adult rooms also have fireplaces).
The big draw for me was the acreage and the activities. I just wanted a very calm and peaceful place after 2 days of busy travel and I found it.
We paid around $135. You are not going to find anything on the beach for under $100.
If you do go to Cambia, check out the Nit Witt House, Courtyard deli for great sandwiches and the shell gas station for souveniers.
If I ever get back to Cambria I would definately stay at the SS pines seaside resort again !

Last year when we visited Hearst Castle, (on our way to Yosemite!)my mother, daughter and I stayed at the Best Western Cavalier Resort. It's right on the ocean and we had oceanfront rooms with fireplaces. they were clean and very comfortable. The restaurant on site is very good. The pools-there are two-are small, but seem to work OK! There is a huge grassy area where they have bonfires in chimineas every night. The hotel is about three minutes south of Hearst Castle.

Try to avoid the weekend nights (F-Sat) if you want to keep it under $100 in summer.
You might want to call Moonstone Hotels which has a range of accommodations in the Cambria area and see if it is even possible. They have a website, moonstonehotels.com. We have stayed at Cambria Pines (which is inland) several times and have been pleased with it, although there are some complaints on TripAdvisor.
Their new pool is apparently open now.

A relative, staying at The Pines recently, told me she got a better rate by booking directly with the motel.
Most motels on Moonstone Drive are overpriced. We paid nearly $200 for a room with "partial view" which meant I could see the ocean if I opened the window, stuck my head out, and looked to the left.

When I was there in May, I stayed at the Burton Inn (www.burtoninn.com). Our room was huge with a separate sitting room and we got an amazing rate on hotels.com. It's not close to the beach, but it is right across the street from Robin's restaurant, which we saw recommended here and loved.
Have a great trip!

There is a Motel 6 that is located in San Simeon. It's just across the highway from the beach. I haven't personally stayed there, but a co-worker stayed for a night last year and thought that it was just fine. She booked a few months in advance since it tends to fill up quickly based on the less expensive rates.

The Bluebird Motel in Cambria is not on the beach but in town within walking distance to everything and is under $100 for a standard Queen room. It's very nice. Anything on the beach in Cambria is much more, but Cambria is much more fun to be in than San Simeon.

The San Simeon motel6 has a reputation for being one of the best Motel6's. If you are staying this summer and early fall, do avoid Friday and Saturday. It may still be tough to keep it under a $100.-. There's a Quality Inn you could check out, though I'm not personally familiar with it.

I noticed the Creekside Inn, in Cambria is running about $119.- plus tax on the weekdays (not Friday/ Sat) this month. One of my brothers stayed ther a couple years ago and liked it. I have heard good things about the Bluebird motel that Nancy mentioned, and the rates are in your range:

Thanks for all your suggestions! I was able to get the Motel 6 in San Simeon for $59.00. It's not the hotel of my dream, but price sure is and it's near the beach. We'll spend the money we're saving on a nice dinner in SF.
I don't know how anyone plans a trip without Fodor's. I've made lots of friends here. Thanks again for your help. Now I'll start reading up on where to get that nice dinner.
