Hello Everyone,

I want to take my bf on a short trip next month for his bday, but I have no idea where to go (just moved here from Fl) so I'd love any suggestions.I want to keep our drive under 4 hours if possible but I can stretch it a bit if needed. We'll be leaving from Leesburg,VA.

I'm hoping to find somewhere that's not a big/ busy city with a lot of traffic and that's fairly walkable. Ideally our hotel would be smack dab in the middle of the area we'd be exploring and there'd be a nice amount of things to do outdoors like patio dining/drinking, historic sites,farmers markets, scenic views etc.

We're in our late 20s and are really just looking for a safe, calm and relaxing getaway where we can grab some good food and explore a new area. We'll be bringing my Havanese along as well.

My research led me to Pittsburgh, PA but I'm not sure if it's a good idea and I'm open to more.

No specific help with pet-friendly but DH and I stayed at a place (a big chain..no charm) that welcomed poodles for a dog show. It could have been Gettysburg or Frederick...both very interesting areas. Charlottesville with visits to Jefferson venues and vineyards. I love Alexandria. Annapolis. Of course, what will be open is the question. Welcome to a nice area and to Fodor's! Please share where you decide and how it went.

I don't know about allowing dogs in lodging, you'll have to check that but the Harpers Ferry area is nice with lots to do. Normally, anyway, I don't know if any of the historic sites are open now but there is outdoors stuff in that area and Antietam battlefield is nearby to visit, if you are at all interested in Civil War History. Obviously there is Shenandoah National Park and maybe check out the newly declared national park at New River Gorge in SE WV. The nearby town of Shepherdstown. You could stay there, actually, and visit Harpers Ferry by day. Your call.

I know La Quinta Inns take dogs. I don't know if there are any in that area or not, but it's pretty easy to find hotels that do with some filter on search sites.

I think that would be a great choice and lots to do in that general area.

Pittsburgh isn't a bad idea if you want a city, but doesn't sound like you do. I don't really understand what your plans are with the dog. You can't leave it alone in a hotel room, they don't allow that. So I guess you plan to just get takeout or something? You'll have to spend time researching that issue if not, as many restaurants don't allow dogs, even in outside area as it may not be what others are wanting to be near or around when they eat. I think Blue Moon Cafe in Shepherdstown does on the patio.

I decided on downtown Pittsburgh to lock something in, but Annapolis looks like something we'd really enjoy! I'll definitely be checking it out for our next trip.Thank you for the suggestions and the warm welcome!
