We found a hotel accomodations through lowestfare.com.We stayed at the Waldorf Astoria for under $200.00. Breakfast and evening tea was supplied also so we felt it was well worth it! Don't be afraid to reserve the STAFF ROOM. We were imagining the worst and the room was beautiful!

Cornelia,
Check out www.travelweb.com for last-minute deals.
The weekend before last, we got a great rate of $189 per night at the Parker Meridien, near the theater district. The usual rate is about $350. I just checked travel web and they don't have anything listed yet for this week. Their deals might also be just for weekends.
If you go to their site, you can retrieve their toll-free number and call them.
Other web sites to check: www.hotres.com and www.express-res.com.
We liked being in the theater district because it's right near Times Square and because we wanted to see some shows. There are scads of good restaurants. (Go to www.zagat.com to see some reviews.)
For shopping, you might find another location better. Depends on your preferences.
Good luck.
