New York Nightlife for the late-twenties
Hi!
Okay, my best friend and I are coming to New York City in less than two weeks and we can barely contain our excitment. We're pretty done on our day itineraries so we thought it was time to begin our search on New York City night life.
We are both in our late-twenties, and love to hang and people watch (or meet hot men ) at bars/lounges. I have heard the meatpacking district was the way to go but I wonder if it's a bit too "chi-chi" for our tastes? We don't want to have to dress up to the nines to go out, but would happily look pretty and go somewhere more upscale than just a neighbourhood pub. Oh, I should add then that we are staying near the theatre district.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Someone had suggested to us the Spice Market...
Thank you!

www.timeoutny.com for what is happening.
If you party downtown, plan on hip jeans (Chip&Pepper, RnR, PD&C, 7, Blue Cult, etc) and a downtown shirt and that will get you in anywhere.
Uptown will be a little dressier. The Upper West Side is a fun area for more bar than nightclub.

I live in NYC and my 2 favorite night life spots are the Meatpacking District & the Lower East Side. The meatpacking district can be a little chi-chi - you do have to dress trendy to feel "at home" at most of the places over there. But the lounges/bars over there are VERY cool - check out APT, One, Lotus and there are a ton of other places in that area (I can't remember the names of all of them since I usually just bounce around when I'm there). Spice Market is a great restaurant and it does have a cool bar and lounge downstairs, but I wouldn't put that on my list for nightlife - it's more of a restaurant.
If you're looking for a more laid back, but still totally fun place to hang, go to the Lower East Side - very funky, diverse bars & lounges. The Delancey has a very cool rooftop bar if it's nice out, Baramundi has a nice outdoor garden as well. There's also the Pink Pony, the Slipper Room, a very cool upstairs lounge/bar on Rivington Street (it's part of a hotel, but you can see it from the street - the entire wall is glass upstairs) - I think it might be called the Rivington?? Anyway, you can just wander around this area and there are a ton of places on Orchard, Rivington, and the surrounding streets. Again, wish I could remember the names of them all, but I usually just hop around.
The East Village is also a laid back & fun area to party. You can dress however you like in both the East Village & Lower East Side. I would get a little more dressed up in the Meatpacking District - at least with a pair of trendy jeans and top - heels and/or trendy shoes are a definite in this area if you ask me. Have fun!! NYC has GREAT nightlife....
