Night life NYC for mixed ages
My wife and I (from Scotland) are going to New York for 5 nights in December mainly for Christmas shopping and sightseeing. We are both 53 and have been to NYC several times before but this time we are taking our 2 nieces aged 13 and 22. Nightlife will not be a big part of the trip but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
One thought I had was BB Kings Blues Club and Grill. I havent been there but they allow all ages and we went to a Blues Club in San Francisco last year that my 18 year old son and I enjoyed.
If anyone has any suggestions but they are strictly over 21 this would also be useful as 2 of us may go out one night while one stays with the 13 year old.
What I had in mind was someplace with live music where adults can have a few drinks but all ages allowed.
The other alternative is a show and we will probably do that as well but looking for something more informal.

Rather than picking a venue, you should wait until your travel date approaches and then pick a performance you want to see. New York magazine and Time Out both have extensive nightlife listings online, along with helpful advice from their critics. I don't think either of them indicates anything about age restrictions in their listings, but judging from the people I see at shows, all but the most alcohol-oriented venues will allow kids who are accompanied by parents. And of course, the listings all have phone numbers, so you can call to double check.

Two offbeat thoughts come to mind. On Monday nights at I think 10 PM at Birdland (the famous jazz place) on 44th between 8th and 9th there is an "open mike night" called CastParty, with various performers, sometimes as famous as Liza Minelli popping in. There is something like a $10 minimum and younger people are welcome. You can eat as well as drink, but it's really about the entertainment.
On Friday nights at 11 PM in the basement cabaret at the West Bank Cafe on 42nd near 9th is "After Party" a similar event only a lot more fun and more wild. It tends to be a little "gay" with the emcee, but nothing offensive and often some amazing performers. There is No minimum, no cover, and no reservations. Just a whole lot of fun.
Both these are great because you can do them after theatre, and not instead of theatre.

Someone on Fodor's recommended Dizzy's Club Coca Cola http://jalc.org/ , and it was a highlight of our trip. We saw Bill Charlap, and I see he is playing there next week.
The view over Central Park at sunset is breathtaking. Tony Bennett was in the audience, and there was a wonderful exciting buzz in the air that I've rarely experienced. The food is OK ...
There is a cover charge, so it's not cheap. Really excellent music, great acoustics.
That's the only jazz in NY I've been too, so, of course, it's just one of many places to consider.

I agree with Andrew, there are all types of jazz, music, and entertainment.
If you go on-line now to Time Out New York and the Village Voice, you can follow places that play your type of music.
There are many talented people who perform at clubs and bars that are significantly cheaper than Dizzy's and BB's.

Most live music venues have no age limit if underage kids come with adults. What you may deal with is cover charges (like a music charge) that's the same regardless of age and drinks minimums where the 13 yr old would get non-alcoholic drinks.
Cafewha.com is one venue that's touted as family friendly with music (rock) and comedy. Any of the jazz venues would be fine. bigapplejazz.com has a good list of jazz venues by area with descriptions. http://bigapplejazz.com/nycjazzclubs.html
There are also a hand full of decent restaurants with live music either downstairs or in the same room. Knickerbockerbarandgrill.com has good steaks and very good jazz on weekends. Blue Smoke is a popular BBQ place also known for good burgers and has the Jazz Standard downstairs (where you can also eat). Jules Bistro and the Garage are 2 restaurants in the village with live jazz and no music charge.
