non-expencive place to stay on Manhatten

I'm going alone to New York late in August and I need a place to stay, I can't pay more than 30$ per night, and I would hope to find somthing between 15$-20$. The only thing I need is a safe bed to sleep in (I'm a woman) and a safe place to have my things while I'm out and discover NY. I would hope to stay close to G.Village, and I don't minde sleeping in a dorm.

Use your $30 to buy a box and pick out a really nice metal grate to lay down on. Thats about all you are going to find.

I checked the American Hostelling International Web site and found the page for the Hostel in Manhattan. It's not in GV, but it's close to the subway line that will take you there.

On the outside chance this question is not a joke, I will respond. If you were in the armed forces there is a place on Lexington offering nice dorm type lodging for $25-40. Forget the name but the USO can probably give you info about it.

I think you will have to pay closer to $30 a night for a shared hostel room in Manhatan, as it's just more expensive here. I haven't heard of any hostels in the Village, but there are several around town in safe areas; make sure you call or email directly though, as I noted that they still list the Murray Hill Inn, although it converted to a hotel some time ago. The best place to get comments on specific hostels is probably www.lonelyplanet.com/thorn, on the USA and Canada branch; that forum has a much greater budget/hostel-going presence than Fodor's. Good luck and enjoy our city!

I suspect the closest hostel would be The Gershwin, which is on E. 27th near Lexington and offers both hotel and hostel rooms. It's safe and clean - I stayed in one of the hotel rooms and was less than happy with customer service at the desk (but I paid $100 per night). The hostel rooms should be $25-30 not including taxes (which are about 13%). It's a 20-30 minute walk from the village depending on your speed and there is plenty of public transport available to get you there.
