NYE Firework viewing in DC/Alexandria?
Hello & happy holidays, Fodorites!
I used to read & post much more often on these boards before I started graduate school here in Michigan this fall, but alas, my traveling quotient (and internet browsing time) fell dramatically since then...
Thankfully, I get a little respite from the work this coming weekend when I travel to DC to celebrate the new year with friends. We are pretty familiar with the city from countless visits, but, we have never been in town for NYE.
I have looked and looked online, and it seems that the fireworks display closest to the district is the Alexandria First Night event. Since this would be a trek from our friends' home in Columbia Heights, we are wondering if it would be worth it? What are good places to view the show? Do we need to trek all the way out to Alexandria? Any other worthy fireworks displays? We will not have a car, unfortunately, so public transportation to & from will be key.
Thanks for your recommendations & have a wonderful and restful week!

Well, I've never equated New Year's Eve with fireworks per se, but Alexandria is not that big a trek from Columbia Heights by Metro. The real draw--in my opinion--is the First Night performances. I can't comment on the quality of the fireworks in Alexandria.

To be quite blunt about it: I live in nearby Arlington, VA, and never even KNEW Alexandria HAD a NYE fireworks display.
I wouldn't consider a drive from the District to Alexandria which is way less than 20 miles a "trek" especially if it means you have a memorable NYE.

Isn't there a fireworks display in the district?
I'm not from DC and all across the country we always see these amazing DC fireworks on the news for new year's eve.
If not, where is the fireworks show that is broadcast?
FYI - Fireworks are pretty important to my husband who is a former pyrotechnician (in Los Angeles). Where should we go to see a good show?
