We are going in April, celebrating 20th anniversary. I've reserved the ResortQuest Waikiki Beach Hotel in Oahu, and the Resortquest Mahana Kaanapali in Maui - 5 nights each place. Does this make sense? We are in our 40's. We like some nightlife, beach, sightseeing. Are these accommodations good choices? Will we like the locations? What are must do - must see activities. I'm afraid we'll never get to go again! Thank you for all your tips, this site is so helpful!

In Oahu, I'd make sure to visit the Arizona Memorial. Get there very early, you will still have to wait in lines, but it is so worth it. Just be aware you can't bring a backpack, fannypack or even a purse.
Also, try to go to the North Shore. Very very beautiful.
In Maui, the water and the beach are the star attractions. I would definatly add a luau and shopping in Lahaina. You can also go to Hana, but it's a long trip. Some Fodorites love the trip, others don't, I'm among those who don't. You will love the islands, have a great time, and I'm wishing you a very happy anniversary and at least another 20 more years of happiness.

Good choice, 5 nights on each island. Also good choice for hotel on Oahu. I don't know much about hotels on Maui.

We stayed at the Mahana a couple of years ago, and liked it. We've been to Maui 8 times and other than the Napili Kai Beach Club which is out of our price range with the kids, it was our favorite place to stay. The pool was small, but close to the beach the rooms were nice and all directly on the ocean.

The Embassy Suites time share is juat next door, they have a neat Koi Pond and a poolside resturant.

As for activites, there are plenty to occupy five days. I think the trip to Hana is worthwhile, particularly if you are interested in the Islands history. Buy the Hana Highway narration CD you will learn a lot. Do some hiking on Haleakala. I like the sunrise, but I'm an early riser either way, its very interesing up there. Kayaking at DT Fleming beach park and snorkling at Honolua Bay. Lots to see and do in Lahaina.

In five days you won't be bored.

Dinners - Oahu - Eat at Dukes - in the Outrigger Hotel next to the Royal Hawaiian.
Maui - Kaanapali Beach - Eat at Leilani's and Hula Grill - both are located in the Whalers Village.

I love the Banyan Tree restaurant at the old Moana Surfrider hotel. Reserve a table for sunset, stay for dinner... absolutely lovely.
