OBX in May or Sept?
Our two families have planned a vacation on the outer banks in 2003. We've picked the beach and narrowed down the houses, but we're unsure as to when to go. We prefer to avoid peak crowds, but we still want sunny days, warm water, and lower rates. Since we both have toddlers and school isn't an issue, we've narrowed down to the week before Memorial Day or the week after Labor Day. I've read that September is warmer water-wise and temp-wise (important for our thin Dallas blood), but May is drier (important for our sanity with 3 toddlers). Which is the better bet weather-wise? Thanks

My family has been going to the Outer Banks(mainly Duck)in Sept for the last 3years. The water is still warm to swim in the ocean and the pools. The streets are very quiet, it my opinion its the best time to visit. Hurricane season does pose a problem, but you can always purchase hurricane insurance on the house rental and not worry about it. Have a great trip whenever you decide to go.

I'd take Sept. May can be chilly, water can be chilly, and as soon as it warms up, you may be already dealing with jellyfish. Sept. is usually golden, and your chances of a hurricane are just not all that great in any given week. As for which is drier, all bets are off w/El Nino. May can be drizzly as much as Sept.
In the last 10 years, it seems to me that the week after Labor Day has been most often perfect beach weather, with the 9/6/96 exception of Hurricane Fran, which actually hit further south.

I live near OBX and have a house there. September is the best time to visit - if there are no hurricaines. We have been really lucky the past few years. FYI - by law, if the County declares a mandatory evacuation, you get a refund on your house rental. If there is no mandatory evac, no refund.
