One perfect day in San Fran - any advice?
I'll be in San Fran for two days, and it's my first visit! I'm staying with friends, flying in tonight. Tomorrow is the free day, and then Friday we plan on touring Napa or Sonoma for the day. I think dinner is already planned for both nights... But, if you had one day in San Fran and had never been there before, what would you see? I like experiencing the "feel" of a city, so wouldn't mind walking a lot. I like natural sites as well, Alcatraz sounds appealing... Any thoughts? I'm sure my friends have things planned, but I'd like to go into it with at least one thing I need to see - besides the Bridge! Thanks!

With only one day I would not do Alcatraz as it will eat up 1/2 day just by itself. Plus without advance reservations you may be waiting for awhile.
-Chinatown
-Filbert Steps up to Coit Tower
-Lombard Street
-Pacific Heights
-Haight/Asbury
-Union Square
-Golden Gate Bridge
-Fort Point
-Nob Hill
-Cable Car ride
Pick one or two and have fun.

I would definitley reccomend riding a bike (or walking) over the Golden Gate Bridge. The view from the bridge is incredible and Sausalito (just over the bridge) is a neat little town.
Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill would be worth a stop. Spend some time walking around Chinatown. Of course, you have to take a cable car ride; hanging on the outside is quite fun!
Also, Golden Gate Park seems like it would be very interesting.
There is so much to do in San Francisco. It would probably be best if you just walked around and stop at points that interest you. You always find the best places like that!!

My one must-do anytime I go to San Francisco is the cable car ride from the beginning turn-around at Market Street, down thru Chinatown to Fisherman's Wharf. Love that!
Have never seen the appeal of Alcatraz myself.

For only one short day, hang out in Union Square for a little while, catch a cable car down to Fisherman's Wharf, eat clam chowder or crab with sour dough bread, have a drink looking at the Golden Gate from any of the touristy bars down at Fisherman's Wharf (avoid eating there, besides you should be full from the crab/bread). Walk to Ghiradelli Square and browse. Take cable car back up the hill.

well, i would suggest golden gate park...just because you get to see regular people going about their lives
i would sort of suggest the wharf, except it is far too touristy and locals try to avoid it at all costs..
perhaps visit the haight ashbury before going into golden gate park?
