What do you mean, "not worth the cost"? Do they have any other choice? They need to drop someone off at a summer camp in Rhode Island, and then get to Cape Cod.
Hertz is $325 pick up Manhattan, return to Boston Logan airport, all taxes and insurances included for non-US drivers license holders.
Personally I would avoid going to Cape Cod just for a Sunday in late July, not worth the traffic in and out. Horrendous.

DebbieDoesDulles thanks for the advice. we are reconsidering to avoid Cape Cod for those reasons. We drop our daughter in RI at around 2-3pm then now we have to decide if flying out of BOS or JFK both flights at around 9pm. BOS is closer. JFK would be risky for the sunday evening retuning traffic. We also gave to return the car going to the terminal etc. I think we will stick with BOS.
