Outer Banks vs. Myrtle Beach & Hilton Head
How do the Outer Banks compare to Myrtle Beach & Hilton Head? I've heard that M.B. is tacky and H.H. is for golfers. Also, which is the best place for families and which is the prettiest (with palm trees & sand dunes)? Are there also good alternatives of places in Georgia? -thanks.

I've been to all 3. For families? It really depends on what the ages of your family, interests, numbers, etc.
If you're looking for lots of other people, all the "stuff" to throw money at on the beach (rides, arcades, shops, etc.), then Myrtle Beach is probably up your alley. There's probably a lot more "going on" there. Oh yea, there's supposed to be a tremendous number of golf courses in this area as well.
The Outer Banks is typically less crowded - especially if you head towards either extreme end. Also at either end, the beaches tend to be deeper. In the Duck area, it's fairly crowded without the expanse of beach to accomodate the people. OBX tends to draw the people who want to rent a beach home for the week, as opposed to MB which has more hotel rooms.
My memories of Hilton Head are good and bad. We had a great time and did some awesome partying - but the couple we were staying with had a major fight - last one of their relationship. The beach was pretty. I remember a fairly significant sandbar a coupla dozen feet from the shore. Yes, Hilton Head is known for their golf. But they attract families as well. Since I was single at the time, I wasn't interested in the family attractions.

Hi Gigi
Been to all three and my vote is for the Outer Banks. A lot of sand dunes but not a lot of palm trees however. How about going to google, doing a search for realtors (who do the renting) and emailing for brochers. The cottages on stilts right on the beach are wonderful!

Whoa. Gigi, are you in Savannah? So you're going to bypass all the beaches in SC & NC to go to Virginia Beach. Honestly, I think there are many other beaches so much closer, that you should have a burning desire to go to Virginia Beach in particular. i.e., is Virginia Beach worth the extra hours in a car?
And if you're planning to drop by Duck on your way to or from Virginia, please rethink that. There are 3 routes on and off OBX: down by Hattaras, Roanoke Island (Manteo/Elizabethton), and Nags Head. The closest is Nags Head and it is bumper-to-bumper on the weekends. Also, OBX is HOURS east of the interstate, so you really don't drop by there. It's a destination. Duck is north of the big traffic jam on a single 2 lane road. There are shops and such in Duck, but in and of itself, it's not worthy of a special trip. The beaches at Duck are the least desirable of OBX. (Duck is my least favorite spot at OBX.) However, there are other neat stuff at OBX: several lighthouses (Hattaras & Currituck), the 16th century replica ship Elizabeth II, the outdoor play "The Lost Colony," the Wright Brothers museum, etc.
Good luck.

S- thanks for your response. We are nowhere near Savannah, but the thought was to get an overview of the whole area making a couple stops for 2-3 days each. But, I haven't heard the best things about Virginia Beach either-- and it is quite a distance to the OBX. What is the attraction to the Duck area and Nag's Head that makes it such a popular destination? Also, what is your impression of Kure Beach?
