Overnight in San Jose enroute to San Fran - hotel?
Hi All,
We'll be travelling from Monterey to San Fran and need a recommendation for a hotel location in San Jose for one night. We are looking for a basic, chain hotel in a good location where we can jump off of the highway to check-in (likely late in the evening), and jump quickly onto the highway again the next morning to continue on to San Fran. No sightseeing for us in San Jose. FYI, we'll be coming from the Monterey area. I was thinking of booking something in the southern San Jose vicinity. Input please?
Thanks!
Alanna

It really doesn't make any sense to stop in San Jose between Monterey and SF. Either stay in Monterey and start for SF in the morning or drive a bit further and stay in any number of hotels near SF airport. The difference in time is only about an hour.
Between Monterey and SF is a two hour drive and you are breaking it up in the middle by driving an hour north of Monterey to stay in San Jose.
However, if you must, try the Holiday Inn on Silicon Valley Boulevard in South San Jose. It's in an OK part of San Jose. There are parts of South San Jose that are not safe, so just pop on and off the freeway to get to this hotel.
BTW, you can get a really good hotel near SF Airport for about $35-50 a night on Priceline. Plus about $10-15 parking. Still would recommend you do this if you can manage another 45 minutes' drive north of San Jose.
Good luck!

Agree that it doesn't make a lot of sense to stop in SJ en route from Monterey to SF - you will spend almost as much time getting in and out of the hotel as you would just continuing on into SF. If there is some reason you need to do this, the priceline option for an SFO airport hotel is a good one - or even some of the online discounters like expedia or hotels.com

I agree w/ the others. I can think of no sensible reason to "jump off of the highway" to stay in San Jose. If you were going to SJ for some reason, sure. But just to stop enroute to SF, I sure wouldn't do it.
