I put my mom and my niece up there maybe 6 years ago when it was a Radisson. At the time, it was perfectly acceptable-- clean, pretty quiet, small pool. Motor inn level, frankly. No one complained about the beds, so I imagine they were fine then. As it's changed hands in the last year or so, I would think some freshening-up has happened (they claim on their website that rooms are newly redone).
You're only a few blocks from the sands in Seal Beach, and just a quick walk to Main Street-- funky shops, good restaurants. You're also maybe 5-6 miles north of Huntington Beach, aka Surf City. Close enough to check it out, but in a quiet little town.

rjw: I can also stay at the Westin,Queen Mary, Marriott or one of the b and bs. I am not on a strict budget. Do you think I would be better off at one of these hotels? Access to a nice beach, walking distance, is key for me as well as accessibility to my friends home. Thanks!

The closest "nice" hotel to Long Beach Airport is the Marriott at Lakewood and Spring. I have never stayed there, but according to friends who have, it's a perfectly acceptable airport hotel. Low-rise (maybe 3 or 4 stories), conference facilities, etc. It is also less than 1000 feet north of the main runway for LGB. I'm pretty sure they've double-paned the windows for noise suppression. You can call and ask. The hotel is maybe a mile and a half from the closest beach. Maybe more.
The Pacific Inn would probably best fit your desire to be close to a beach. It's just over the county line, and as I noted before, it shouldn't be more than 10 minutes from your friends' house. And the beach in Seal Beach is quite pretty. Other hotels in the Long Beach area are either not close to a beach, or they're close to a not-very-pretty stretch of sand.
I know of two B&Bs near me (one up the street from my condo!). One is on Broadway (I forget its name)-- a converted Craftsman house, very charming. The closest beach is actually not bad-- but it's down a bluff. Still, not a long walk (or bike ride), and again not far from your friends' house.
If you're looking to stay at a hotel/motel, the Pacific is a pretty good choice.
