I have checked Xanterra's website and because there is no availability for the time we visit South Rim, we called the lodges. I found on http://travel.yahoo.com/p-hotel-3577...G7J8lXafQJ8b8F phone no. for Thunderbird Lodge. In this way it looks that you can make reservation for next 48hrs only.
Can anybody help me with lodges' phone no. where I can check the availabilty trying to avoid Xanterra ?

Unless the policy has changed, you can't do what you are trying to do. Sorry. You might want to make a reservation for one of the hotels in Williams, AZ and keep trying to get something in the park. Then cancel the Williams reservation (but make sure you know the cancellation policy).

If you are getting a cancellable back-up hotel outside the Grand Canyon, I would go for somewhere in Tusayan which is just outside the park. Williams is about 60 miles (so an hour or so of driving) away from the main Grand Canyon village area.

I know this is late, but just to clarify, the Xanterra central reservations office IS the advance reservation number for our south rim lodges (NR, Bryce, Zion, DV too). In the US call 888-297-2757 or outside call 303-297-2757. In other words, these are the direct phone numbers to reserve the south rim lodges.

The hotels themselves don't make advance reservations. The 928-638-2631 number is the hotel switchboard for all of the south rim lodges. If you are on the road, and want to see if you can get a reservation for tonight, you can call this number.
