public transportation from the new orleans airport
is there public transportation from the airport to downtown? is it easy, quick, convenient? or would we better off taking a taxi? We are staying at the W hotel downtown.

I found getting a taxi was equivalent to taking a shuttle. (Actually learned that right here at Fodors!) The benefit of taking a taxi is you get dropped off at your hotel, and don't have to wait around until others are dropped off. To my knowledge there really is no good public transporation from NO airport. The airport is actually quite a distance from downtown.

There's a shuttle from the airport to the downtown hotels that costs $13.00 per person. If you take a taxi, the cost is $28.00 plus tip.
If you have 2 people, you are better off taking a taxi for the extra $2.00 -- plus tip. For 3 people, it would still be cheaper than the shuttle. You won't have to stop on the way to drop others off.
If you go the the airport web site, there are links to limo and bus transportation as well.

If you are arriving during a very busy time, there could be a long wait for a shuttle, and taxi for that matter. The shuttle makes stops in the FQ which can be a nightmare. If you happen to be on the last stop (I always seem to be the last off the shuttle) it could take more than an hour. Try to double or triple with someone else and share a taxi.

To answer the orginal question- YES there is an airport bus for $1.60 to Elk. Pick up is upstairs from baggage claim- on the ticket counter level. http://www.jeffersontransit.org/
This is a separate company from the downtown NO public transportation. It is too far to walk to the W. So you would walk a couple blocks to Poydras and get one of the buses going toward the River. You need to pack light with only one small rolling bag. I take this bus EVERY trip.

My husband and I took the bus to downtown. We were staying at the Crowne Plaza so we had to walk a few blocks with our luggage after we got off the bus. It wasn't bad but we won't do it again. It was evening and we felt a little nervous about the whole thing. Even though we saved quite a bit of money, next time we're going to take a cab.

I know it costs a little more, but it's so nice after you've been on a plane to be at your hotel in the quickest manner available. We always go with the taxi and if the driver is good set it up in advance to return us to the airport on our way home. Enjoy the city!!
