Reservations in Monterey/Carmel

Can anyone tell me if it is necessary to make reservations at motels in the Monterey/Carmel area, or are there plenty of motels to chose from and get a room on the spot. Also, if anyone has any suggestions to motels that they liked. Thanks

I would make reservations, but then I'm a planner. We stayed at the Pacific Inn in Monterey last May, and I highly recommend it. The rooms have a nice little living area with a gas fireplace, and great down comforters. Good continental breakfast, too. I would stay in Carmel next time but I definitely think your options are more limited and I think Carmel is pricier.

Make a reservation. Six years ago we went up the coast from LA to SF, and could not find a single room between north of Hearst Castle until we came to Santa Cruz. We were told that this was normal on weekends.

Priscilla,
Have stayed in Monterey at the quaint "Victorian Inn" located on Foam St. (http://www.victorianinn.com It is within walking distance to the Cannery shops and restaurants. Continental breakfast is served and each afternoon wine and cheese. We found this hotel very comfortable and enjoyable. Oh, and yes...I would recommend reservations beforehand.

Unless you're going during the summer or over a holiday you'll find a room somewhere - but it might be a basic Motel 6 in a dreary part of Monterey.

Best Western Mission Inn in Carmel is great.

We live in the area. I would get a reservation to insure you stay at a nice place. There are a few dumps around that you want to avoid.

Pacific Grove is a great town to stay in and has many good hotels and B and Bs with Bay views. Go to www.pacificgrove.org and check it out. More ocean views than touristy Carmel.

Has anyone stayed, or can compare the Green Gables to the Highlands Inn? Trying to decide between the 2! Thanks!

Re: Lisa posting above. The GREEN GABLES is an old Victorian Bed and Breakfast located in Pacific Grove. Great location overlooking the Monterey Bay and easy walk down the beach to the Monterey Aquarium. It used to be the boyhood home of a friend of mine. If you like b and b's you will enjoy the GREEN GABLE INN.

The HIGHLANDS INN is also very nice but a modern hotel, not a b and b. If you enjoy hotels with ambiance, you will enjoy this place. It has views of the ocean but is not located on the ocean.

Hope this helps. You will not be disappointed in either place. It all boils down to your preference. I am partial to the town of Pacific Grove because I live there.

either make a reservation or be happy staying at some Motel 6 down below Fishermans' Wharf. Your choice.
