Route to Palm Springs

We are from the Uk and will be travelling from San Diego to Las Vegas via Palm Springs. Can anyone advise how 'good' 74 is across the mountains for someone who is not used to steep, winding roads. We will be in an intermediate size car.
Thank you.

It is steep and winding in places, but scenic as well.
Otherwise you can take interstate 15 to 10 for a flat journey.

I love Julian.
The Eagle mine tour is located right in town and is very interesting , especially when they turn out the lights!
Don't forget to buy some pie.

We enjoyed the route through Julian and I don't recall any major scary steep and winding roadways. One thing that surprised me about Julian was how much cooler it was there. We went in March and it was in the 30s, while it was quite warm in Palm Springs. Just FYI.
