Sacramento

I'll be there for one day only and need advise for "stuff" to do. Will not have a vehicle but cabs will do, right?

I would just stay downtown and old town, where everything is in walking distance. Otherwise, you'll need a car. While there are cabs to be had in Sacramento, they aren't as prevalent as in other big cities. As for sites, funny someone just asked a few minutes ago, so I'll copy my advice here:

Ideas for November include:
--Capitol (a must)
--Old Sacramento in general-- shopping, sightseeing, the river...
--The California State Railroad Museum (another must see) (also in Old Sac)
--Crocker Art Museum is nice-- not far from Old Sac in downtown
--Delta King Riverboat in Old Sac: www.deltaking.com
--Good places to eat in the area include the Rio Vista Cafe next to the Delta King, the Delta King (food not as good as Rio Vista), the Firehouse (also in Old Sac), 28, Esquire Grill. More casual places include Frank Fats, California Fats, Fanny Ann's Saloon, Paragary's, and Cafe Bernardo (amazing breakfasts!).
--Take a River Cruise on the Spirit of Sacramento (meal or no meal) http://spiritofsacramento.com/
--For shopping, Downtown Plaza in downtown, near Old Sac, is nice.
-- There is an IMAX theater downtown near the convention center.

Sherry, it's Rio City Cafe as in River City (Rio is spanish means river) as in Sacramento, the River City. Now Rio Vista might have a Cafe called Rio Vista Cafe but it's not located in Sacramento.

Esquire Grill is good. Just went there last week. It's next to the IMAX which you might consider depending on the weather. Don't know when you're planning to come but those spots on Sherry's list are typical tourist stuff that are oh so boring unless you like the old timie pictures and candy shops, mediocre art and state buildings.

Sherry's right about the cab situation but Sacramento does have light rail that may be able to get you to a few places. Where are you staying? If it's the weekend you might try priceline for good rates on either the Sheraton or the Hyatt. Both are adjacent to the convention center which is at the end of the K street Mall where the IMAX and Esquire Grill are located. At the complete other end and under the freeway is old Sac.

It would help to know when you are coming.

I had to laugh at my post and maybe you will too. What I meant about going to the IMAX depending on the weather was that if it is stormy and you want to do something indoors you might consider the IMAX. Of course that usually only takes up an hour or so of time.

Your post didn't mention when you'll be in Sacramento. If it is in the next week or so from now, bring rain gear. The storm door is open and it is wet and windy and will be so foe the next 10 - 14 days. The Delta Queen river boat is a hotel as well as restaurant and is an ok place to stay for one night. I know, I know there are many better places, but the location is great - in Old Sacramento, close to many good restaurants, museums and shops. By all means see the Railroad museum. Stay dry.

Also, we were staying at the Sheraton a week before my wedding working on final details recently, and it (and the IMAX next door) was NOT as far as X makes it sound from Old Sac as X makes it sound. Actually, it was a rather easy walk, under the freeway bridge and through Downton Plaza. We did it with 2 eight year old flower girls and a 67 year old grandma. It was a nice day.

Hey Sherry calm down, sorry to get you all riled up by disagreeing with you. I did provide some things to do. Sorry it wasn't a list. If you've lived in the area a long time and you've been to these places then you know they are lame so why would you recommend them? I never take visitors to any of those places.

I would recommend other places if I knew where Kathy was staying and when so I could zero in on places she could get to. For example, today would be a horrible day to go to Old Sac, wouldn't you agree? Even shopping at the Plaza would be a drag since it's mostly outside.
If Kathy is staying at the Hyatt or the Sheraton and it's not raining I'd suggest a short walk to the Governors Mansion at 16th and H.

Bottom line, need more info on when & where.

The Sheraton is at 12th and J. Macy's ends at 4th & J. The Holiday Inn butts up against the underground walk to Old Sac which starts at 2nd street. Only the walker can judge if 10 blocks is short or long.

Kathy,

How about ice Skating at the Old Navy Ice rink near the St Rose of Lima Park on the K street Mall. Then you can go to the Hard Rock Cafe for lunch and do some shopping at the Plaza shops. Since the Capitol is across the street you could do a quick visit there if it interests you.

Doing some of the activities mentioned here will depend upon the weather which is kind of bad today. It's very windy and it's raining.

I forgot to say that the skating rink is completely outdoors and it's small but it's a fun time filler.

Hello, I am considering a possible relocation to the Sacramento area. Because I have never been there before, I decided to peruse this message thread to learn a little bit about the area. I realize that this is a travel board but hope that somebody will indulge me with some basic information about the area? Can a single person survive financially with an annual income of $60K? On average, how much are one bedroon apartments in a middle-upper middle class area? What suburbs might I consider as a place of residence? I am guessing that the cost of living is (hopefully, considerably) less than the Bay area. Any morsals of information that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Paul - I just found you post. Hope you are still checking. $60K would be a nice income. Mid-level analysts with State Government earn about $50K+ so you would be right there in the ball park. That is a pretty good yardstick. As for 1-bedroom apts - it entirely depends on the area. But nice apts in desireable complexes will run from under $800 to about $1200. Where is your company located - it makes a huge difference. The commutes have some really black spots so you want to be in an area that is convenient to you job.
