San Diego Area Small Hotels or Inns?

We're headed to San Diego for a convention in April and are looking for a small hotel or inn to escape to after the convention is over. We're not opposed to something closer to LA since we haven't booked our flights yet and could possibly fly into SD and out of LA. Looking for something with charm, definitely a pool, and hopefully some Pacific Ocean views. Thanks!

Well, for spectacular/amazing, head up to Terranea (Rancho Palos Verdes) and get a room facing the ocean (and Catalina). You can hike all over the grounds, to the lighthouse and have fabulous Michelin rated food all right there!
This is almost identical to the room I had... except it was on the ground and I could walk straight out to the cliffs. My patio was open and it is just stunning. So worth it!

Your post is understandable (many have asked for the
same type of lodging) however there are really very few places that meet your request in either San Diego or LA.

San Diego has very, very few hotels (let alone small hotel or Inn) on the ocean...and what few lodgings exist on the water, most are on the San Diego Bay.

So something will have to give, if you are going to find lodging..either you will have to settle for large hotel no charm, hotel on the San Diego BAy, no ocean views or a hotel close to the beach.

Here are some options for San Diego
Hotel Del Coronado.
http://www.hoteldel.com/
Lg property ON THE OCEAN..multiple options & pricing, some rooms with ocean view. Consider the Beach Villas at the Hotel Del. More private, with private pools, direct ocean beach access and some views, private concierge and private "Beach House" where you can sit on beachside patio, w/firepits, serves breakfast, dinner, cocltails outside, full sweeping view of the OCEAN..

Glorieta Bay Inn
http://www.gloriettabayinn.com/
Small boutique Inn near Hotel Del on Coronado, but BAY views not ocean. Very good write ups, small, charming and close enouhg to go to Hotel Del spa, another way to get to beach access and Hotel Del without spending all the money & enjoy Coronado.. a walkable town.

Tower 23

Closer to La Jolla has a pool, directly on the OCEAN, with direct access to the beach, hip younger crowd, nice access to LA Jolla, about 20 minute drive to San Diego (watch rush hour traffic)

As 1JAT infers, if you give up the ocean view there are smaller charming places to stay in La Jolla or on Coronado. I'll add the Torrey Pines area.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! I guess we would much rather give up the views than give up charm. Ideally we'd like to be close to the beach, but since we'll have a rental car beaches in driving distance would work too.

2 blocks to the beach but no pool. http://www.1906lodge.com/blog/corona...c-hotel-in-u-s

La Valencia in La Jolla is probably closer to what you want, but experiences can be uneven there. When only 70% of reviewers give it a thumbs up, I think that's worth hesitating. http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...ECK_RATES_CONT

I've not stayed there but eaten there a few times. There can be a musty smell in the hallways.

The Ritz Carlton in Laguna Niguel is another idea. http://www.travelandleisure.com/hote...uel-dana-point

Should probably add the caveat that we're trying to keep nightly costs under $300 since we're going to Key West the month before for vacation?

We've now got it narrowed down between Tower23 and L'Auberge Del Mar. Votes?

check this one out too:

even though it's not overlooking the ocean, it's old wealth and world charm.
