San Diego Hotel Recs

Hello,

My husband and I will be in San Diego in October for 5 nights. We are looking for a hotel where he may conveniently get to the convention center (walk or shuttle) and where I will be able to step out to go shopping, sightseeing, etc. Does anyone know of any hotels that would fit this description? Smaller ones that are not major chains would be great if that exists in the convention area.

One other option I was considering is the Hotel del Coronado so that we could be away from the masses (the convention will draw about 25,000 people). I was at Hotel del a few years back and recall a trolley/shuttle that went downtown and other areas...but I don't remember how long it took to get downtown from there? Does anyone know?

Thanks for any suggestions or information,

Hyatt downtown would be perfect-it is big chain but there are two towers and the best location-http://manchestergrand.hyatt.com/property/index.jhtml

if you are young at heart you might like the OMNI next to baseball stadium and gaslamp districk-http://www.omnihotels.com/hotels/default.asp?h_id=71

try looking for deal since that week should be low season!

I live in san diego so you can ask more if you want..

You might consider the Marriott on Coronado. It's just across the Bay from the convention center and you can cross by ferry.

Alternatively, take a look at www.sandiego.org for downtown hotels. if any look interesting to you, come back here and ask for more information.

Which hotels are being used by the convention you're husband will be attending?

Aargh! sorry, that should be "your"! One of my pet peeves, and I did it myself. That's what happens when I try to talk on the phone and type at the same time.

Hi,

Thanks to both of you for your responses. The hotels that are being used by the convention are the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego and the San Diego Marriot Hotel and Marina.

Either of these will be fine, but I was hoping for some suggestions that would be a bit away from the convention crowd, but close enough to walk or shuttle to the area -- maybe something a little smaller and cozier rather than larger high rises.

Do either of you know if Hotel del would be a reasonable enough distance from the convention area by shuttle? I realize it's a large resort, but may be away from the maddening crowds a bit...

What about the Westgate? I am hoping for good answers since I just booked it for 3 days in Sept! It is across from Horton Plaza & the shuttle stop is supposed to be right in front.

How about the US Grant? It is a smallish hotel, refurbished, right across from Horton Plaza. Maybe 6 blocks to the convention center?

We just stayed at the Marriott Marina over fourth of July weekend and loved it. We got a room in the north tower with a balcony, up on the 18th floor. The rooms were nice sized. The deal is the location. You have the marina and boardwalk behind the hotel, Seaport Village next door for small shops and cafes, Horton Plaza about four blocks, Fifth Ave. close by with tons of restaurants and shops. We loved having so many things right there to do and within walking distance.

The hotel is large, but the service is excellent. They couldn't do enough for us. Every need was taken care of. We stayed on the Breakfast getaway and got free parking, free buffet breakfast each morning, and some other amenities. I would recommend this hotel.

I second PeggyE's suggestion of the Westgate.

I have stayed there before and it really is a terrific place. Good downtown location within walking distance to the convention area and shopping such as Horton Plaza plus impeccable and friendly service (PeggyE, I hope this is the answer you wanted to hear to erase any concerns! But then again this is not why I am posting here, but rather because I was really pleased with the place!). It does come at a price sometimes, but it is refreshingly "non-chainey" if a bit traditional, though. After all, it (at least to my understanding) is a San Diego institution, so you might want to check it out.
Nothing wrong about either the Hyatt or the Marriott, though.
Beware that the Westgate is very service oriented but as many conservative downtown hotels does not sport a pool, if that is of any importance.

Thanks for the side info hsv! I'm thrilled to hear your review. No, a pool is not important. I bid for & got an auction package on luxury link & it includes breakfast & parking, champagne & a dinner at Le Foutainbeau (which alone looks like it could run $150-$200)& various amenities so the price is right too!
