San Diego - Which Area ?

Hi, I'll be visiting San Diego for 3 days with my 12 year old son the week after Easter. We're planning to visit the Clairemont Skateboard Park, Sea World and the Zoo. I'm thinking about looking for a hotel in La Jolla. Would this be a good place - or should I check for hotels downtown or in another area? Thanks for the help.

I'm not clear where you mean by the Clairemont Skate Park. Is that the one at the Mission Valley YMCA? (He might like the park at Robb Field too.)

If it is, then there are places to stay that are closer to the things you will be visiting than La Jolla, although La Jolla is not very far and is very nice.

You might look at the Doubletree on Hazard Center Drive. It's right next to a sports-themed restaurant called Trophy's, which your son might like. It's also not far from Junior Seau's restaurant in Mission Valley.

Consider the Wild Animal park (north of San Diego near Escondido about an hour drive) much more interesting for a 12 year old. If you want beach then the best bet for 12 year old if you can afford it might be Hotel Del. Coronado is nice area, hotel on ocean beach, can walk around nice town safely and alot of kids that age seem to be there.
Other consideration would be stay at m ore affordable Shelter Point Hotel on Shelter Island on the Big Bay.. Again safe area, lots of park like grassy areas to walk, picnic, view of ocean, view of the city, big ships and NAvy jets, helicopters flying in and out of the harbor up close. Convient to Seaworld, freeways, visiting La Jolla. Ocean Beach has a skate board park right on the way to Seaworld on the water. Go to Fort Rosecrans PArk, see view of all Coronado air station, San Diego into Mexico..maybe even some whales..play in tidepools.
Mission VAley which is close to Shelter Island Point has a new Fudruckers..hamburger shake type restaurant.

Have a look at www.sandiego.org the official tourist website for San Diego. Lots of information here, including money saving coupons. You can also send for a free information booklet.

Lots of good places to stay. Where are you coming from? Is it important to be on the water? How many $$ for a room? Will you have a car?

Come back with a little more information and you will get some more help.

Sandy

Thanks for the help. Yes, the skateboard park that my son wants to go to is at the Mission Valley YMCA. He loves to skatboard so we'll probably check out Robb Field that was mentioned too. We will have a rental car. I'm now thinking we should probably stay in the downtown area instead of La Jolla. I checked the baseball schedule and there is a game Thursday night. That would probably be fun to do. I would like to stay somewhere nice, but under $200 a night. Thanks for the tips! Yvonne

ymn, if you go to the web site that SandyBrit suggested, www.sandiego.org, and put in your dates, you'll find out which hotels have vacancies.

If nothing is available in your price range downtown, close to Petco Park, then look for somewhere close to a Trolley station. The Trolley will take you right to the ballpark, so you wouldn't have to bother with parking.

You could also try Priceline. I have never used it, but many people here have.

HI..
I would stay in the Mission Valley area since it is close to the skate parks that your son is interested in and you wanted to do the Zoo and Seaworld.
Robb Field is a great skate park
2525 Bacon Street, SD 619 525-8486
Poway Skate Park is a great one too..
powayskate.com 20 minutes north
Clairemont Skate Park
3401 Clairemont Drive (619) 279-9254

Mission Valley Hotels:

towncountry.com
hanaleihotel.com (they have for $195 a night a zoo and snooze with breakfast for 2 and 2 tixs to the zoo)
comfortsuitesmv.com
hilton.com/en/hi/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=SANMVHF

Trolley is a great way to get around San Diego.
transit-rider.com

La Jolla is such a great city, will be pricer but you might as well check it out..they do alot of skateboarding but it is on surface streets.
Here are some links to some hotels:
lajollacove.com
empress-hotel.com
travelodge.com/lajolla

Have a wonderful time in San Diego with you son!
