San Francisco, the clam chowder sourdough bowl

The only time I was in SF, we went down to Fishermans wharf and I saw the yummy looking sourdough bowls filled with clam chowder. Unfortunately, I had just eaten lunch and couldn't try one. I am determined to try it this time, especially since I've seen taht very thing recommended on here a few times Can anyone tell me who it is that serves these on the wharf, and if it's numerous places, who's the best?

Thanks (salivating already )

I've never had one on the wharf in SF, but I've had them plenty of other places and chowder in a bread bowl is one of my favorite things - it's only 9:30 in the morning and now I've got a craving for some.

I hit reply too soon. I was also going to say that I believe there are several places that have chowder in the bread bowl on the wharf. I'd probably just walk through and ask each vendor for a small sample and then buy a bowl when I found a good one.

There is a great chowder place IN the airport. I love it when we have time on a layover to stop and eat there! Not sure of the name...something like the chowder bowl or similar!

There's a good one in Ghiradelli Square, on the corner, downstairs (near where the laughing guy is singing and playing his guitar).

Boudin's of Fisherman's Wharf is perhaps the major provider there of the chowder in the sourdough bowl. I love the concept, and taste, but I've never figured out how to keep it off my nose!

Yes, Boudins on Pier 39 is the best!

The last time there, we got ours to go and enjoyed it while watching the sea lion 'show' behind the shoppes and restaurants. It sounds sooo good right now as i'm wondering what to make for dinner.....sigh.... i'm salivating! Maybe we'll go out....

You can't walk 10 feet in Fisherman's Wharf without falling over a Boudins. If you are planning on taking any sourdough home-get it here. It is the same bread that is sold in the airport for a lot less. If I am not mistaken, they can box it up for you for the ride home. Really good bread, and great chowder in the bowl!
