San Jose airport?

San Jose is not a mega airport with plenty to keep you busy all day. There are 2 terminals, the old terminal is really kind of quaint as you walk up the stairs to get on the planes. Alaska and I think United are at that terminal. I actually enjoy it since it is so easy to get in and out of the terminal area and to board your plane.
The newer terminal (Terminal A) houses Southwest Air, American and others. It does have more shops and restaurants (I think Gordon Biersch just put a restaurant in there, but basically it's Mc D's and Starbucks. No real shopping except the gift shop. Think commuter airport. Are you meeting someone there on a long lay over and thinking of meeting there for lunch? If so, I wouldn't. I would grab a taxi to downtown SJ --there are a lot of nice restaurants there and the commute is not far - 15 minutes.

San Jose International Airport actually is in the midst of a $1.5 billion expansion. In Terminal A you will find many new restaurants have opened lately. In addition to Gordon Biersch, Starbucks,and McDonalds there is California Pizza Kitchen, Cinnabon, TCBY Yogurt, Juiceworks, Pretzelmania, and Max's San Jose. Terminal C has Starbucks, Senor Jalapeno, Harbert's Express, Burgur King, Lappert's Ice Cream, Noah's Bagels, Expedia.com Cafe, amd Togo's Sandwich shop. Both terminals have several gift shops and Duty Free Shops for International travelers. Go to www.sjc.org for more information

I assume that maybe you are connecting through San Jose on your way to another destination. If you have enough time between flights, going to Downtown SJ (Ceneter City) would not be a bad idea. A cab will probaly be about $10-12 each way. You can also catch the free VTA(Valley Transportation Authority) SJC Flyer #10 bus in front of Terminals A and C. Get off on First Street and take the VTA Light Rail which is going toward Santa Teresa. Getting off at either Santa Clara Street or Paseo De San Antonio will leave you closer to the center of The City. There are many great restaurants in the area as well as shops along First Street, Post Street, and Paseo De San Antonio near the Fairmont Hotel. San Pedro Square, which is about 2 blocks west of Santa Clara Street, has several notable restaurants from the casual Spaghetti Factory to Blakes Steakhouse, Spiedo's (Italian), to the highly rated A.P. Stumps.
