Savannah or Charleston for a meeting in January
I need to choose a location for a small business meeting (14 people and we all know each other)in early January. Can't decide between Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA. Need nice restaurants (price is pretty much no object), shopping, historic area. Also, my husband, we will accompany me is a golfer. What are the chances for golf in January? I know both cities have all of the above--that is what is making the decision so difficult. Help!!!

Charleston at the Wentworth Mansion.

Golf at Kiawah at the Ocean Course. Home of the 1991 Ryder Cup which is a huge deal.
Golf is great here in January.
Shopping and dining are just a little better in Charleston than in Savannah.
Really tho, you cannot go wrong with either city.

Have to agree w/ GoTravel re: golf out at Kiawah. The Ocean Course (http://proshop.kiawahresort.com/ocean_course.html) will also be the home of the 2007 PGA Senior tour and a new PGA tournament in 2012.
Wentworth Mansion is a great place for meetings. Another historic home is the William Aiken House (www.williamaikenhouse.com). Other hotel options are Charleston Place (www.charlestonplace.com) - which has a fabulous spa and indoor pool, Mills House (www.millshouse.com) - it is a Holiday Inn property but you would never know it, or the Renaissance Charleston (www.marriott.com/CHSBR).
As far as restaurants in Charleston, Peninsula Grill (www.peninsulagrill.com) is one of my favorite restaurants. Some others that are nice but not as upscale as Peninsula are Poogan's Porch (www.poogansporch.com), Hank's Seafood (www.hanksseafoodrestaurant.com), 82 Queen (www.82queen.com), Grill 225 (www.grill225.com)
If you do book here in Charleston, contact the CVB (www.charlestoncvb.com)and they can send you packets for all your attendees of Charleston activities and sights.

This is probably 1 of the most asked ?'s on this site. For some Savannah votes, check GA. I am a non-golfer from the Northeast who would strongly vote for Hilton Head where I visit at least twice a year. Savannah is an easy 45 minutes away and HHI has all of your requirements. All of the hotel chains are there, golf is 12 months a year, and the Savannah airport is cheap & very easy. You might even find group deals at seapines.com - the Inn at Harbourtown is very nice & often reasonable.

We recently stayed in Charleston,we did not stay at the Mills House, but it really looked convenient to downtown activities. The restaurant we loved was S.N.O.B. The steak was superb. We enjoyed a group carriage ride(Holds 8 or so) much more than the Ghost tour. The best part of the trip was Boone Plantation and Middleton Place. My husband played golf at Hilton Head during the second part of our trip.See my post on Charleston-Hilton Head for more info.
