seven days on the coast of Maine

My husband and I are planning to spend a week along the coast of Maine in June. I have been looking at Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, and Bar Harbor. From the messages I see, I almost believe that we need to visit all three. Should we stay in one location and do day trips to the other locations (although it may be more than a day trip to BH).

We like a little of everything. Shopping, eating, hiking, biking, whale watching, etc. I think that we would like to stay on the oceanfront.

I would love to hear from anyone with their suggestions for the locations that we have chosen regarding lodging, restaurants, etc.

You are likely to find fans for all three, because they are quite different. We definitely lean toward the Bar Harbour area and have been staying near there for 20 years now. Atmosphere, shopping, excellent sea food, whale watching and day trips to the "authentic old Maine", Stonington, Castine, Deer Isle, Blue Hill.

I would stay in Ogunquit or Kennebunkport for a few says then head to Bar Harbor. Og and KBP are very close and would both be good places to use as a base for surrounding towns. Bar Harbor is awesome with great hiking etc and is a great place to spend a few days.

Ogunquit and Kennebunkport are very nice but can be crowded. I would skip them and substitute day trips to Camden and Boothbay. We enjoyed a stay in the Damariscotta area two years ago and are planning Searsport this year. The Martime Museum in Bath has great boat trips but I haven't seen their schedule posted yet. Make sure to explore. Boothbay was very crowded but just a few miles away there was a small, almost deserted beach. Keep your eyes peeled for little signs directing you to lobster. The smallest place we went probably only had 6 tables right on the water outside Rockland. Don't forget binnoculars. Have a great trip.

Being a resident, I can highly recommend Belfast/Lincolnville. Lots to do and see and not too crowded in Belfast. It is also centrally located for day trips up and down the coast. If you like old cars/planes, check out the Owl's Head Transportation Museum just south of Rockland. There's something nearly every weekend there thru fall. Take a breathtaking flight in a bi-plane! Great way to really SEE the coast! Then there are the 6 day Windjammer Cruises off the coast. Pure Heaven for real R&R! (Check out the June '02 Yankee Magazine! We took that trip and it was awesome!) You'll never be able to do all you find there is to do when you arrive, so begin planning your next trip! Enjoy!

Another vote here for Boothbay Harbor, especially the Ice Cream Factory (too bad Ben & Jerry's built a shop right in front of them and is stealing their business!).

I like quiet Wells a little better than Ogunquit, but those and Kennebunk are close enough to do together. I'd say two days there, two in boothbay, and three further north, Bar Harbor or Southwest Harbor.

The earlier in June the better, beat those crowds!
