SF Hotel Help
Attending A wedding in SF at Sir Francess Drake hotel. Rooms are available throught wedding party however, stayed there in the past (5 years ago) and NOT impressed, small and old looking rooms. Would like to be close to host hotel on the night of the occasion. Any suggestions on any area hotels with larger more updated rooms? Please help. Thanks

Just around the corner (on Sutter) is a thoroughly business-oriented hotel-- the Crowne Plaza San Francisco. It has a nice lobby bar, and the location is pretty central to all of SF (and just north of Union Square). The rooms, especially the mini-suites, are pretty spacious, the beds are comfortable and on the upper floors, the views are quite pleasant. It's a good deal for the money, but....
It has little of that San Francisco burnished glow to it-- when I say it's thoroughly business-oriented, that's its feel: Mid-level Big City Business Hotel. Still, you're maybe fifty steps to the Drake.

Hi moo, I have quit staying at the Sir Francis Drake too although I read some months ago that the hotel was going to be renovated. I don't know if that has taken place or not.
Anyway another hotel you might check out is the Donatella Hotel which is located at 501 Post St (just one block from the sir Francis Drake). I haven't stayed there for ages for various reasons but their rooms are quite large and at least in the past the rooms were quite lovely.

Check www.biddingfortravel.com and bid on Priceline. You'll save $ and get a good hotel.

Right across the street from the Donatella is the JW Marriott (used to be the Pan Pacific). I stayed there two weeks ago. Again, somewhat of a business hotel but I loved it. Room was big, bathroom was amazing and the bed was very comfortable. I think it's my new business hotel in SF. I also got a good rate for a Thursday and Friday night.

The Donatello and the former Pan Pacific are two hotels that I've routinely directed business associates to in the past, with good reports. The Donatello in particular gets almost no press, is not flashy, but seems to be very pleasant and well-kept. Both these properties are in a super location - close to Union Square but not right on its perimeter.
Hey rjw_ljb_ca, loved your reference to the classic S.F. "burnished glow". Know what you mean and how rare it's getting.
