Skiing weather in january?
My husband and I are thinking about going to Colorado to do some skiing in mid January 2006. We're thinking about Copper Mountain and Winter Park. How is the weather then? is it too cold in January? Is there someplace better to go? We live in the northeast, so we can always go up to vermont, but we would like to try going out west. thanks.

In our experience, the Summit Cnty. area, Copper, Breck, Keystone, Vail (different cnty) etc. is very comfortable in Jan. Because CO is so dry, 20 degrees out there feels like 40 in the NE. We spent a month out there this winter and have had a condo in Killington for 20 yrs. Temps, in terms of how cold it feels, were no comparison. Temp. said 5 and it felt like 25. You will love it. Snow cond. are also much better. Not so much ice.

Mid-January should be great, and with fewer crowds. Snow and temps will vary, but should be good. Check weather stats on-line for average temps and snowfall. It is true that the drier air here makes the cold less bone-chilling.
Copper and Winter Park aren't exactly next-door neighbors. It's about an hour's drive, plus or minus, between them. Are you thinking of doing both, or deciding between them? What do you want in a mountain and a ski town? Because those two are very different.

We are beginner skiers (just got our own skis) and are looking to do a week out West to improve. We were thinking spending half our time at Copper and half at Winter Park. My sister went to Copper with people who had never skied before and she said they were able to ski the green trails. We don't care too much about nightlife and have no kids. We just want to go someplace where we will improve without killing ourselves in the process.

Hi Alzaloum,
I live in Park City, Utah, another place you might want to consider. If you want to ski here, you might have extra fun coming during the Sundance Film Festival in January. The slopes are empty, but the restaurants are jammed. If you make your reservations NOW you can get a reasonable room rate and if you eat in (condo) you won't have conflicts with the film crowds and can just enjoy the skiing by day and the films at night.
Green runs are green runs, meaning beginners should be able to ski them at any resort. Park City is a wonderful place for beginners and so are Deer Valley and Alta.
As the other poster above said, skiing out here is rarely as cold as the east. Our drier climate makes the temperatures very comfortable. You'll love the snow!
