Staying in Oakland while visiting San Fran?
Has anyone stayed at Homewood Suites Oakland-Waterfront for visiting San Fran?
How safe is it? How is the local transportation into San Fran?

The best part about staying in SF is the fact that, just about anywhere you stay, there are nice places to walk to. And the rest is within a short bus ride. I wouldn't dream of staying in Oakland if it was San Francisco I was coming to see.

Parts of Oakland are very hipster cool, parts are very affluent, and parts are downright scary. Unless you are a local, or visiting friends in Oakland, staying in Oakland is an illogical choice for visiting San Francisco. Public transportation into the City is not convenient from the hotel location and driving in and out can be a nightmare during the very long rush periods i.e. 6am -11am and 3pm to 7 or 8pm.

People in Oakland somehow manage to get into San Francisco quite easily. It's not the end of the world.
I assume that you have some reason for choosing this hotel such as a great rate or you're looking for family-sized accommodation with kitchen. The area is safe and they offer free shuttle to the Bart and around the local area...however their shuttle doesn't run on weekends so that's a big negative if your visit is on a weekend.

I personally would be very reluctant to depend on a shuttle to/from an Oakland BART station - unless the driver sat there and waited for the next train with me.
I had to travel to and stay overnight in Oakland for work once a month (and sometimes weekly) for three years - it is NOT a place someone not totally aware of every neighborhood should stay.
This hotel is decent and for Oakland the location is about as safe as it gets. But it would be a nasty base for touring SF. You'd have to take the hotel's shuttle to the BART station and then ride across the Bay. This is doable - but semi-inconvenient. For the trip back in the evening -- Hell no - I would NOT take BART to Oakland and hang around waiting for a hotel shuttle . . .

Easily is not a word I would use If it's rush hour, if BART is not running, if there is no parking at BART stations, if it is late at night. . .people in the East Bay manage to get into SF most days because they have to for work.

If cost is the reason for the question, look on Airbnb for an apartment in the City. Here are the listing for apartments, with parking, under $200 a night. If you want to spend less, adjust the pricing accordingly, at the top of the page:
