Stillwater, MN -Things to do/Places to Stay

We are going to be in Minneapolis in late September and plan to drive up the St. Croix River highway to Stillwater and Turner Falls. Would love recommendations on places to stay in Stillwater, restaurants in either (seafood, Italian), and particular things to see and/or do. Thanks!

Hi Rosebowl,
We stayed at the Laurel Inn, which was quaint and satisfactory. Ate at a restaurant overlooking the river. Don't remember the name. Stillwater has tons of antique stores and other types of gift ships. You can also take a river cruise with or without food. If you like old, picturesque houses, Stillwater has a ton of them. Enjoy.

Hi Rosebowl-

We stayed at the Elephant Walk Inn a few years ago. It's a charming Victorian home decorated with items from the owner's travels. We had a delicious breakfast there and enjoyed our stay very much.

Can't recommend many restaurants although I have read good reviews of the Bayport Cookery.

We love hiking at Turners Falls. We've also had fun canoeing down the St Croix. We rented a canoe and just had the company pick us up when we arrived at our destination.

Stillwater also has some nearby orchards if you are interested in apple picking.

Have a great time-- the fall leaves will be beautiful then!

A restaurant called Savories is suppose to be excellent-although I have not personally been there. Friends of mine love it! It is on the main street as you drive through
Stillwater-a french bistro sort of place.

The Dock Café – nice outdoor seating – I like having a cocktail and appetizer there. For Lunch-Brine’s Bar (Main Street) – very inexpensive but good food. For dinner: Marx Wine Bar (Main Street)(Italian) if a weekend - you would need a reservation. There's also a fun place called the St. Elmo Inn nearby-great food; very popular and the largest collection of salt&pepper shakers.

Thank you so much for all of these great suggestions. We have never been to Minnesota and are really looking forward to our time in Minneapolis and the Stillwater/Turner Falls area...hope the weather that time of year will be crisp, not too cold, and clear for all of the outdoor stuff.

I think the OP means "Taylors Falls" not Turner Falls, which would be about a half hour north of Stillwater. I live in NW Wisconsin but work in Stillwater so I drive through Taylors Falls on my way. Many of the restaurants and the B & B are actually my clients. All of the suggestions so far are good. Late September should still have fairly nice days/cool evenings. Just bring a sweater or light jacket and you should be fine. Keep in mind that the Stillwater Bridge is now closed for repairs until the first of November. But then if you're traveling to Taylors Falls you wouldn't be crossing there anyway. But at least walk down to Lowell Park and enjoy the views of the bridge and the river. Any other questions, let me know. Pam

Thanks PamT. I also thought that Rosebowl meant "Taylors Falls". However when I read Jane R's reply, she stated they had hiked at Turner Falls. That's why my question. Thanks again.

It was a total brain lapse on my part-- I knew she meant Taylors Falls and yet, I still typed Turners! Pregancy brain rears its ugly head again!

Thanks for the correction PamT!
