Suggestions for NYC w/teens in July?
My family with two daughters, 18 & 15, are making a 2nd trip to NYC July 9-14. Our last trip a few years ago covered so much - Statue of Liberty, MOMA, Empire State Bldg., Madame Toussad's, Broadway play, Serendipity, Wall Street, CHinatown, Tavern on the Green, Central Park, Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center Ice Skating. What's left to do? Teenage shopping ideas? What else to see? We will go to WTC site for sure, but anyone who knows NYC, we would love some restaurant suggestions, places to visit, shopping, etc. that will make our 2nd trip as great as our first! Staying at Doubletree, Times Sq. Being from Atlanta, we get great theatre at the Fox, so that's not at the top of our list. Help all you NYC insiders!!!!!

MissAtlanta, I just topped one thread for you but there are many others. Just do a search with "teens" in the search box and choose New York and you will find LOTS of ideas.
I suggest the Lower East Side Tenement museum. We really enjoyed the Tasting and Walking tour of Greenwich Village as well.
And, being from Atlanta, I strongly disagree regarding the Fox. As wonderful a venue the Fox may be and as good as the Broadway national tour companies may be they are a distant second to a Broadway show in NYC. I would spend a big of time on www.playbill.com. To see Liam Neeson in person just feet away from you or Neil Patrick Harris perform as the Emcee in Caberet or well known movie and TV stars perform live in front of you - well, there's no comparison. Reconsider a Broadway show - with or without a "name" actor.

You certainly did cover alot of ground last time! You could do more low key thing's this trip. Walking over the Brooklyn bridge to Grimaldi's pizza. Going to Graces Market and getting all sorts of gourmet treats to enjoy in Central park as a picnic. Seeing smaller off broadway show's. I am also going to N.Y. soon and I am intrested in the Flea market's and Green Markets on Sunday. There are different one's but last trip I found cheap cool stuff and intresting street food. It's exciting!

One more thing, for shopping you have to go to Century 21 and if your daughters are into cool costume jewelry check out a place called (So good jewelry) in SOHO. It is on 496 Broadway. My Sister and I stumbled upon it last trip and I was in heaven! I found fabulous thing's that were soooo cheap. I bought earings, and an necklace and earing set. I have seen identical item's in Sak's and Neimen Marcus for much much more. I have kicked myself so many times that I didn't buy more but I was overwhelmed. I can't wait to go back!

Have you ever walked across the Brooklyn Bridge? Pick a clear day, take the subway to Brooklyn and walk back over-great view of the NYC skyline, the bridge is so beautiful up close and the walking path is very wide. I make this walk on every visit to NYC. I also agree about the Broadway shows...nothing compares to Broadway. I think the girls would enjoy "Wicked".

You didn't mention the Met. My favorite museum in the world. The Guggenheim. Natural History Museum. They also usually have wonderful shops to buy posters, jewelry and books.
There is Bloomingdale's and Barneys and Bonwit's.
And then there are the local gourmet shops to check out, like Zabars ( I think they boast the largest cheese selection in the world, and I believe it) and another place down south on Fifth I think, that I can't remember the name of. Will post it back.
Personally I love just walking from place to place and watching the people, the neighborhoods change, the archetecture. That way you can just discover the city as you go and find things, little parks, little areas you can't find in guide books. Great for a trip after you have seen "all the sights". To me, that is what NYC is all about.
And be sure and "talk" to the local people. They love to share their opinions about life and the city. The girls will love that. On our last trip, we met the most amazing people. A cab driver whose cab was his church, and a Greek restaurant owner who came and sat with us to share stories about the cafe and his family. It is so rewarding to take the time to chat and visit with the people. I have always found that New Yorkers are open, friendly people, well not all, but many.
Times Square is something to see, once, but it is not indicative of NYC, in my opinion. It is a commercial mecca filled with other tourists. So get out in the neighborhoods and really see NYC, if you can take the time. You will LOVE it...IMO.

Thanks for the good info, especially shopping and restaurants. And, yes, I do know that Broadway is great b/c we saw Annie Get Your Gun last time and thoroughly enjoyed it; it's just that we do get to see good theatre at the Fox and wanted to spend more time/money doing other things this time in NY! Girls really want to hit the "cheap" good shopping for purses, jewelry, clothing, shoes, etc. Any more suggestions are appreciated.

I will get hammered for saying this but your girls will love me for the recommendation. CONWAY has the BEST cheap (yes I know best and cheap don't go together often), but honestly, they do have great tees, jeans, shorts, stuff for school and it's all at GREAT prices. That's where I get all my summer stuff. The best one is next to Macy's at 35th and Broadway.
There's also Macy's, H&M, GAP, Daffy's (the best one is at Herald Center, but there are several locations around the city, SOHO on Broadway too)
Canal St, will also WOW them, lots of funky jewelry, purses, fun stuff.
You could have lunch in Chinatown and have desert in Little Italy.
They also might enjoy the Central Park Zoo or the Aquarium at Coney Island, or a day at the beach at Jones Beach or Fire Island (package deals from Long Island Railroad at Penn Station).
The Bronx Zoo is also very close to the Botanical Garden so you could do both in a day.
You also might enjoy the Cloisters Museum and Gardens, which is part of the Metropolitan Museum. It is in Ft. Tryon Park in the Northern most part of Manhattan. Take the #1 or the A train up to 191st St and walk through the park to the Cloisters, you will have NO IDEA you are still in Manhattan, and the views of the Hudson River from there are SPECTACULAR!!!
Every weekend in the city are street fairs, Sat and Sun and your girls will love them, lots of things to buy and fun food. You can Google search for the fairs up while you are here.
Paul and I are in Chinatown almost everyweekend, so if you would like to meet up for Dim Sum, please let me know.
You will have a great time, and the weather will be nice and hot.

It didn;t look ike you did the Ellis Island Immigration Museum last time - and I highly reco it. Besides having the opportunity to track family members - if they emigrated through there - it is a wonderful overview of the lives and challgenes faced by all of the immigrants to the US - and a testament to the increible diversity that makes NYC in particular - and the US in general - unique in the world.

to nytraveler - yes, we did Ellis Island last time, too! I used this site and planned almost everything "big" to see. Since ATL has all the big shopping names, we are looking for the local, or names stores not found here. Sounds like H&M is a must. Will print all this out in a few days and go over all the places listed. Keep it coming!!
