Summer 09 SD/Yellowstone/GTNP - still need help
I have started work again on our summer trip. Now that Amex has discontinued their domestic companion program I am going to try to use miles - so now I am back to fly in to Rapid City and Fly out of Jackson Hole.
So here are my thoughts on the itin . . .
Day 1 Travel Day - Fly into Rapid City
Day 2 Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Black Hills
Day 3 Head to WY - Devils Tower, Ucross
Day 4 Cody
Day 5 Drive to YEllowstone 1st night at Canyon
Day 6 Lake Yellowstone - 2 nights
Day 7 Lake Yellwostone
Day 8 Old Faithful Inn 2 nights
Day 9 Old Faithful
Day 10 GTNP - Jackson Lake Lodge?? Snake River?? Havent booked a place to stay - looking for feedback on lodging.
Day 11 GTNP
Day 12 Travel back home
I have all the Yellowstone Reservations, again looking for any feedback on lodging in GT, and the trip timing, and stops.
Thanks!!!

Jackson Lake lodge is marvelous, a step up from most national park lodges. We spent lots of time on the back terrace watching wildlife.
We had a non view room inside the lodge, less expensive. The lodge is a little dated like all park lodges but we loved it

Consider Signal Mountain Lodge as well in GTNP.
Personal choice, but I'd stay in Buffalo,Sheridan or Ranchester rather the Ucross and then take US 14 over to Cody. If I wanted to make a longer day of it, I detour north a bit to the Little Bighorn Battfield.
Don't miss the Buffalo Bill Musuem in Cody.

Your itinerary shows you at Canyon for 1 night (day 5) and then at Lake for 2 nights. Are there good reasons to change from one to the other when they are less than 20 miles apart? If you are entering from Cody to go to Canyon, you have to backtrack to get to Lake. I'd suggest that Canyon is more centrally located for touring the park's east side and that the next move would be to Old Faithful area for the west side activities.

I just added the Canyon night this week, the other nights I have had since last August. I couldn't extend time at Old Faithful or Lake Yellowstone. Should I just ditch the Canyon res? or ditch the Lake and add on at Canyon?
spirobulldog -Thanks for the rec on the caves - I hadnt thought of that and it looks great - we did some caverns in No. cal last year and we really had fun. Whats to do in Custer State Park??
Thanks!!
