Super Bloom on Calif/Arizona road trip?

We are driving from SF Bay Area to Phoenix, and then up towards Petrified Forest Nat'l Park next week (April 13) and would love to take a route where we might see a super bloom. Any suggestions? I've heard Coachella Valley is nice; would that entail going far off the main road?
Thanks very much in advance.

This page will also have info focusing on the super bloom on the Carrizo Plain in San Luis Obispo County. You could head down 101, then cut over thru SLO County, Carrizo Plain, to I-5. Or detour off of I-5 to Carrizo.

There are huge California poppies in bloom at Antelope Valley State Poppy Reserve near Lancaster, in fact there was a story a week ago about two nut cases who landed a helicopter in the middle of the poppy fields. Sadly they did not catch and arrest them.

It appears the Carrizo Plain is not big on poppies. I would rather see poppies!

Yes desert superbloom in CA is mostly over....plus isn't the Coachella Music Festival this coming week? Avoid the area.
