hi cybor,
i live in the town you misspelled (sp?), lol. newburyport, gateway to plum island, smallest city in massachusetts, home to the most diverse and fine examples of architecture ( federal, greek revival, victorian, church steeples with bell's made by paul revere) as a result of being the first port in mass. all those sea captain's with their houses with widow's walks and rum running tunnels from their houses to the river port where slaves were also scuttled along the freedom trail. also home of the nations's first coast guard station, first yacht club, first private school, blah, blah, blah. sitting in a major river valley that run right into the significant expanse of coastal land called the "great marsh" that runs from maine to maryland puts us on the map for all the major bird migrations. for reasons historical as well as wildlife, we don't have malls and anchor stores yet because of all the preserved land and refuges.
HOWEVER, those nantucket developers are buying up our water front along the merrimac river, which you can see from the top of most every street running perpendicular down to it because it is undeveloped and our general skyline is very low. we're scared!

Hi corwin - I live near Newburypart (actually just "West"). Love your description!

Padams421 - Another place to look into might be the Mt. Washington Hotel. Its in the White Mountains of NH and has a big beautiful porch, fireplaces etc. Maybe spend some time in Boston and then head up there. Its about a 2 hour drive.

My vote would go to Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Sudbury, MA. It's supposed to be the oldest inn in America, and a visit is always interesting. One good feature is that there are no TV sets in the rooms; so peace and quiet are possible.

The dining room features authentic American menus, including fabulous corn muffins. Dinners are 7 courses, with quite a few choices among each.

Near the Inn is the little red schoolhouse where Mary and her lamb went, and you can visit a working grain mill. Walking in the area is excellent.

bennie,
just "west" of newburyport is the rest of the country! (lol) i just moved here from byfield, which i absolutely loved. my children prefer here because they can walk or bike or skateboard to everything.
cybor -- i don't think there is too much anyone can do, theses nantucket developers have sneakily already bought up all that waterfront land...and are planning...gasp gasp gasp...an outdoor walking mall that will block off waterfront access for the rest of us. all i can think is good lord, where will all those shoppers park! that's largely what's held that type of development at bay, no place to park in this tight little nest of a city. a hotel is going in also, with conference facilities. we're doomed.

That's a shame, corwin.
There's plans in Provincetown to rehab the McMillan wharf pier to add resturants, shops etc. This will cut into the already small amount of dockage for the local fishermen and raise the rents for those who are already there. This will nicely drive the local fishermen and industry away.
