What ever happened to the "Days Inn Motel" Chain?

I have never seen such a horrible place as the Days Inn Miami North Airport. There appeared to be blood stains on the carpets and hall walls. There were cigarette butts everywhere and smoky smelling, foul rooms. There were all sorts of seedy people hanging around. I was too scared to sleep that night as we heard screaming in the street. However, we found a really good authentic Cuban restaurant a couple blocks away... but I will NEVER book another Days Inn. Never.

I think when members of the Days family were killed in an airplane crash the family involvement in the chain dropped. It was an up and coming chain a couple of decades ago. I can't think of a single Days hotel I would stay in now. There does not seem to be any quality control, and the hotels seem to be older hotels bought when newer versions have been built by other chains.

I have a very frugal husband who would often try to talk me into a budget motel when we were on the road and just needed a place for one night. I've had so many bad experiences with all the low end chains in various cities that I almost never stay in a budget place anymore.
It has nothing to do with the housekeepers. I think, for the most part, they are hardworking, diligent, competent workers. It's not their fault that there are stains on the mattress, old crummy pillows, bug infestations, and run down conditions.
I have been pleasantly surprised at some of the budget motels, but really mortified at others. If I can possibly avoid them, I do.

I just stayed in a Days Inn (by mistake, long story) and was dreading it due to the very bad reviews on Tripadvisor.com. I was pleasantly surprised....I mean, it's a budget motel, after all! what do you expect? The service was very good, the rooms basically clean. I liked that I could help myself to free coffee and water all day, every day, as an added perk, since I drink a LOT of water.
Would I stay there again? Maybe. It wasn't the Westin but I sure saved some money.
When I was checking out, a customer was trying to extend his stay but the Days Inn could not accommodate him....they said the next days would be big days for them and they were already booked solid.

"What ever happened to the "travelguru1" poster?"
Long gone. He registered on Oct 17, started 10 or 11 really inane threads like "Loved Europe, but disliked the cold unfriendly European people" and has not been heard from since.
On one thread he stated he had never been overseas and on others he said he's been going to Europe since the 70's
A total troll.

There have been three or four of those recently all with the same routine. I suspect they are all the same person. Distant traveler is just like travel guru -- off hand, I forget the others. They're all pretty forgettable, after all.

I have stayed at several Travelodges, Days Inns and Quality Inns.
There is a trick to them. First, don't stay in one that is completely downtown and a lot cheaper than all the other hotels in the region. There's a reason it's THAT much cheaper and the area usually isn't that nice.
If it's the only hotel in a town (or the only other is a high priced resort, b&b, etc.), then it's going to be pretty basic - there's no competition to provide anything "extra", you either stay there or spend a ton more.
The best ones are those that are outside of the downtown area, but on a direct public transit line into the downtown. Those cater to business people (on a budget) and tend to have some ammenities.

In the 5 tours we made in the Us we stayed at many Motel6.When you're touring you only need a clean room, bathroom and we've mostly found that, especially in the West of the country. When you stay somewhere for more than one day we also prefer a bit more comfort or a hotel closer to the action.Last year on our Southeast tour we stayed at a Motel6 in Wilmington NC:very nice;one in Atlanta(Stone mountain)
ome small discrepancies due to the housekeeping staff. The Days inn we stayed at was in Asheville near the Mall.No problems there. We're also very satisfied about the Comfort Inns we stayed at.Paul
