What to do and where to eat in Savannah?

We will be in Savannah arriving Nov.1 and departing on the 3rd. We have reservations at the Ziegler house. Since this is a short stay I want to do as much as possible. We like architecture, browsing in shops and walking. Can someone suggest a 2 day itinerary? Any feedback on the trolley tours, Midnight in Garden of good and evil or tour of homes? Looking for good restaurants but not fancy- Good fish, seafood steak with good appetizers. I have checked out reviews online and although Elizabeth's on 37th, 1790 and Sapphire grill seem to fit the need, they seem expensive and very upscale.Any comments on Vic's on the River, Belford's or the Chart House or the Shrimp Factory?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

misscarol, sounds like you would like The River House, right on the water. We eat there every time we go to Savannah ... more casual but excellent food & drinks, not as expensive as restaurants you mention.

Marvelous appetizers at The Pink House (in the bar downstairs). And we ate at Tubby's twice just because the open air patio was so nice.

If you have a sweet tooth or are looking to bring home local treats, be sure to visit River St. Sweets, right on the Savannah River, near the Hyatt for their world famous pecan pralines. Second on Mrs. Wilke's Boarding House, avoid Paula Deen's place, big rip off. Trying to remember the name of the cafeteria located along one of the squares which had very good home cooking style food for a very reasonable price. We found some interesting purchases in local galleries from students at SCAD (Savannah College of Art& Design). The visitor center (MLK Blvd?) had lots of tour options. We are usually there in terrible summer heat & humidity and have done a purchased CD audio tour which worked out fine for us. If you or anyone in your group has Girl Scouts, be sure to visit the Juliet Gordon Low house - http://www.girlscouts.org/who_we_are/birthplace/.

Uncle Bubba's Oyster House is related to Paula Deens, but food is decent. It is on way to Tybee Island, about 10 minutes from downtown Savannah.

Sorry but I disagree very much regarding The Lady & Sons (Paula Deen) being a rip-off. Have eaten there several times; it was always wonderful (and I'm a good country cook, and love her style of food.)

I wonder if the differing reports on Paula Dean's restaurant have to due with ordering off the menu or having the buffet.

We ordered of the menu and were disappointed. However, everyone we spoke to that had the buffet said it was great.

clueless, we always get the buffet as well as adding on some things from the menu (especially the fried green tomatoes.) Never a single item that we did not love, over several visits! Many friends have had the same experience. I hope you'll try it again ... unless, maybe, that's just not your favorite style food?

We enjoyed a magnificient dinner at Lady & Sons. We ordered off the menu.

We very much enjoyed the "The Book" tour with Oglethorpe. Our guide was fantastic, and we really enjoyed the visit to the cemetary.

We thought the best guides were on the Old Town Trolley hop on/hop off tours - especially Pookie!

Another recommendation for ordering appetizers off the menu (Pink House) downstairs in the tavern. Gail Thurmond (pianist/vocalist) is excellent and plays most nights.

If you enjoy 50's music, be SURE to check out "Return to the 50's" at the Savannah Theater.

We've enjoyed dinners at 17 Hundred 90 - but the lunch buffet is also excellent and they have a nice (complimentary) spread (along with a very nice fireplace and comfy sofas) at Happy Hour. On one visit, round of roast beef with all the fixins (fantastic horseradish sauce).

We've also enjoyed Vic's on the River. Went for dinner, then returned for lunch. Lovely views of the river from the windows.

Sapphire Grill is very atmospheric with excellent food if you like more "interesting" food. It's pricey, but well worth it.

B. Matthews on East Bay is a terrific place for breakfast, lunch, packing a picnic.

And, we had amazing pulled pork sandwiches at a place around the corner from the Forest Gump church.

Thanks for all the recommendations.
What exactly is the "Book Tour"? I would appreciate any further info on this tour or the "Midnight in the Garden" tour.

Stop by the Visitor's Center and you will find info about the tours. One of my favorites was "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". This tour took us to the cemetery.
The bus-trolley tour of the city will give you a good overview.
A restuarant I enjoyed this year was The Chart House on West Bay St.
Walking around the city to the squares is interesting. Just get a good map showing the areas and you can't go wrong roaming around.

Just returned from a week in Savannah where we revisited some of our favourite haunts. If you're interested in architecture, never mind the trolley tours, just get a good guidebook and map and walk around the squares, cemeteries and Forsyth Park. If you're looking for good food, authentic atmosphere and not much pretention, I would suggest Desposito's for seafood (just over the Wilmington river bridge in Thunderbolt) Johnny Harris' Roadhouse for BBQ (Victory east of Skidaway), Crystal Beer Parlour (Jefferson at Jones) and for a tasty but very reasonable lunch, Larry's Cafeteria (Skidaway, south of Victory). And of course, you won't go wrong with the down home southern cooking at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House.

Far and away the best restaurant in Savannah, and one of the best in the country, is Elizabeth on 37th.

It was two years ago, but I really enjoyed the shrimp and grits I had at Belford's (yes I keep trip diaries). I thought it was delicious,& suitably "southern" (I always prefer something I couldn't get at home), and not so fancy as to make me feel I should be wearing diamonds somewhere.
The market area was nice for an afterdinner stroll--I seem to remember a jazz combo that evening.
