Wine country airport choice

A family wedding has prompted a trip to wine country in July. We plan to fly in, rent a car, attend a wedding in Napa, and spend a few days sight-seeing. We are three "country gals" and not used to big city driving. We could use some suggestions concerning which airport would be the easiest to navigate from for the beginning and end of our trip. Any other information concerning reasonable lodging, "don't-miss" wineries, etc, would be greatly appreciated.

Oakland Airport is your best bet. Don't know where you're coming from but Southwest Airlines has many flights into Oakland. Where in Napa is the wedding? There are some reasonable lodging options in St. Helena and Calistoga, both on the north end of Napa valley. Be prepared for very warm days in July! Bring sunscreen, hats and stay someplace with a pool!

Not sure what it will do to fares, but you could also look at Sacramento airport. Oakland is still probably your best bet, though. It has simple freeway access and is only maybe 45 minutes* to Napa proper.

* Of course traffic being what it is in the Bay Area, if you are during commute you could easily add another 45 minutes to that.

We flew in SF and took Hwy 80 to Napa and it scared the H*** out of me. Road in bad shape, drivers were wild. 101 from Sonoma back was better. It is not hard driving in Napa, Sonoma is better (for many reasons)prettier, quieter and there are directional signs to the wineries at intersections.

Sacramento airport is about 45-60 minutes from the city of Napa. Also, the drive would be easier for someone not used to "big city driving." Landing in either SF or Oakland may get you caught up in major commuter traffic depending on the time of day you arrive. Oakland would be much easier than SF in that regard.
