9 International Destinations That Are Still Welcoming Americans

Dreaming about leaving the States? These places still have their doors open to Americans.

Given the current state of affairs, many Americans wonder if they will be welcomed or shunned abroad. Some are so concerned about how they will be perceived that they hide their identity and pretend to be from somewhere else entirely. This new reality, combined with rising protests against tourists everywhere, has some Americans wondering where they are welcome.

Before ironing a maple leaf patch onto your suitcase, consider one of these destinations rolling out the red carpet for Americans.

Canada’s Eastern Townships

Canadians are renowned for their politeness. However, since President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Canadian-made goods, they have made it a habit of booing the U.S. National Anthem at sporting events. Nevertheless, Canada’s Eastern Townships want American tourists to know they shouldn’t be ashamed of their origins when they visit. The region released an ad letting Americans know that in the Eastern Townships, Americans are more likely to be welcomed with a sympathetic look and a hug than scorn. Americans will find plenty to do in the Eastern Townships. The region boasts four national parks, a Dark Sky Reserve, and an abundance of microbreweries and cheese factories. Plus, since the townships are in Quebec. Americans who don’t feel comfortable traveling to Europe can experience European flair without crossing the Atlantic.

Norway

Norwegians first set sail for the United States over 200 years ago. Many of them became full-fledged Americans and never looked back. Now, Havlia Voyages is specifically inviting their American descendants to discover their Norwegian roots–and extending a discount to American guests to encourage them to set sail to Norway. Even Americans who don’t have Norwegian roots are welcome to explore the country and learn more about the connection between the two nations.

Reykjavik, Iceland

The land of fire and ice is known for making sure everyone feels welcome. One of the most famous sites in the country is Rainbow Street in downtown Reykjavik. According to a local hotel, the very Instagrammable rainbow painted on the most central street in Iceland’s capital city isn’t just a pretty photo op. It represents the country’s “unwavering commitment” to supporting diversity and equality. It’s a clear symbol that Iceland is ready to welcome all Americans, including those who feel marginalized in their own country. Hotel Ranga, along Iceland’s south coast, offers Americans an “analog package.” Visitors from the United States who want to escape the news back home get a paper map, a disposable camera, and playing cards so they have everything they need to get by without doomscrolling the news back home while on vacation.

The Algarve, Portugal

Portugal is a popular vacation destination for Americans. However, one region is going above and beyond to let Americans know they are welcome. The Algarve, along Portugal’s south coast, has beautiful cliff-side beaches, towns with cobblestone streets and colorful buildings, and historical sites. Recently, the Algarve brought travel agents from the United States to Portugal to see the region’s beauty for themselves. Now, these travel agents have all the knowledge they need to recommend the Algarve to their American clients seeking a European destination free from hostility towards Americans. A new direct flight connecting the Algarve’s capital, Faro, and New York launched in the summer of 2025, which makes it even easier for Americans to visit.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

The Westin Resort and Spa Puerto Vallarta is launching “The Calm They’ve Been Craving” package just for Americans who need a break from the chaos at home. American guests will be warmly welcomed to this beachfront property with a chilled hibiscus or lavender herbal-infused drink, along with a “15-Minute Reset” welcome message to provide relief and a moment just to breathe.

Calgary, Canada

Calgary, Alberta, wants Americans to know that the city is “a welcoming place for all visitors, especially Americans, during this particular time,” says a spokesperson for Calgary Tourism. To let Americans know they are welcome, Calgary launched an ad campaign highlighting why the city is a great place for Americans to visit. Calgary is trying to woo Americans by letting them know it’s home to the world’s largest rodeo, its cooler temperatures make it a great place to escape the heat in the States, and some of America’s favorite television shows, such as The Last of Us, were filmed in Calgary. Plus, the ad emphasizes that the favorable exchange rate means that a trip to Calagery will be about 30% less expensive than a similar vacation in the United States. Perhaps most importantly, Calgary is proud of its reputation for being home to some of the friendliest people on earth, and they are even friendly to American visitors.

Greenland

In the United States, interest in Greenland surged after President Trump expressed an interest in buying the country. Many residents of Greenland, which is a self-governing part of Denmark, expressed widespread opposition to the plan. Some started wearing MAGA hats to let the world know they wanted to “Make America Go Away.” However, that sentiment appears to apply only to Americans who think the country is for sale. Greenland is welcoming all other American tourists with open arms. On June 14, 2025, the day President Trump celebrated his birthday with a military parade in Washington, D.C., Greenland celebrated the first direct flight from the United States. Visit Greenland notes that more Americans visit Greenland than anywhere else in the world, aside from Denmark and Germany. They hope to see this number increase now that it’s even easier to get there.

British Columbia, Canada

The Commercial Bear Viewing Association of British Columbia understands that Americans may be hesitant to travel internationally. British Columbia wants to reassure Americans asking if they are welcome in Canada. Their message is that the province is “ready to welcome you with open arms… And, of course, we’re sorry you even had to ask.” British Columbia boasts a wild and beautiful landscape, perfect for viewing bears in their natural habitat, taking expedition cruises, and hiking.

Japan

Japan Airlines (JAL) is encouraging Americans to come to Japan and explore the country far and wide. Americans who book round-trip tickets to Japan on JAL can take free domestic flights within the country. That makes it easy to explore all the country has to offer beyond Tokyo and Kyoto. The only catch is that domestic flights within Japan need to be booked at the same time as your round-trip ticket.
