If You Have 1 Day
If you have only a day for the Porta del Sol, head to Joyuda in the Cabo Rojo region for some of Puerto Rico’s freshest seafood. You probably won’t be the only one driving from San Juan for this feast.
If You Have 3 Days
If you have a few days to explore the region, start in Rincón, where you’ll find accommodations for every taste, from compact inns to sprawling resorts. There isn’t too much to see, other than the lighthouse at Parque Pasivo El Faro, but you will find plenty of beautiful beaches. The secret’s out about many of them, but you can still often find complete solitude on beaches near Aguadilla or Isabela. On Day 2, drive south to the Cabo Rojo region. Your first stop should be Joyuda, where you can choose from dozens of seaside restaurants. After lunch, continue past Boquerón to the Morrillos Peninsula. This is the end of the line, quite literally: the road ends at the Faro de los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo, a lighthouse that once warned sea captains about the treacherous waters around the island’s southwestern tip. On Day 3 you can explore more of this windswept landscape and take a leisurely drive up to the Rincón Lighthouse for some of the best sunsets in the island.

If You Have 5 Days
After spending three days along the western coast, you may be tempted to ride on the open waters. On Day 4, head up to Aguadilla Water Sports for a Jet Ski rental and enjoy the waves. Afterward, there’s enough delicious places to eat nearby to satisfy even the pickiest eaters in your party. For your final day, enjoy breakfast at The English Rose, and head toward Isabela for some hiking at the Guajataca Forest Reserve.
