10 Best Places to Shop in Avignon, Provence

Background Illustration for Shopping

Avignon is too residential to be full of tourist-aimed boutiques; instead, it has a cosmopolitan mix of French chains, youthful clothing shops (it’s a college town), and a few plummy fashion streets. Rue des Marchands, off Place Carnot, is one shopping stretch, but Rue de la République is the main artery, the largest concentration of high-end clothing, jewelry, elegant thrift stores, and other fashion-forward shopping is along Rue Joseph Vernet. Shops are generally open Tuesday–Saturday, but chains will be open Monday, too. Shops often close at lunch, so don't be surprised to find a note on the door between noon and 3 pm. It's the Mediterranean!

CQFD

Fodor's choice

Part charming café serving lunch, snacks, and coffee, and part concept store, CQFD (Créations Éthiques Franco Décalées) is hands-down Avignon's chicest shopping destination. Its spacious rooms brim with a curated selection of whimsical clothing and jewelry, chic stationery, tableware, soaps, cosmetics, and handmade housewares (including eco-paints and hand-blocked wallpapers). Everything is eco-conscious—and made in France.

Aline Géhant

The artisan-chocolate master is famous for her pralines (made with fine nuts and ganache), sourced chocolates, delicate flavored chocolate squares with seasonal fillings (cinnamon, mint, lavender, rose, ginger), and other confections. Everything is stylishly packaged, too, so it’s a great place for gifts.

The Beaucoup Store

This is like multiple stores in one, with sections for superstylish fashions (including chic bags, scarves, and adorable jewelry) and decor and lifestyle (candles, vases, linens, room fragrances)—all with a boho-Scandinavian flair.
