Barclay Hotel

The location just steps from great shopping and affordable rates make this three-story building one of the city's best-value pensione-style 2-star hotels. The guest rooms are bright and clean, if a bit basic, but the 1930s building, with its wide corridors, skylights, and mahogany staircase, has old-world charm. Most of the front rooms overlooking Robson Street have mountain views, but the back rooms are quieter. Because the hotel caters to bus tours, make sure to book in advance.

Granville Island is one of Vancouver's most popular destinations, for locals and visitors, but unless you've moored up in a houseboat, the only overnight option is the Granville Island Hotel. The exterior of this offbeat waterfront building is part Mission style, part industrial, but the result is modern and sophisticated. Most guest rooms have water views through full-length windows. Rooms on the top floor have small balconies. The corridor in the east wing has a quirky view overlooking vats at the fashionable Dockside microbrewery downstairs. Convenient to shopping and nightlife, the budget-friendly, family-run Kingston occupies a four-story elevator building dating back to 1910—this is the type of lodging you'd expect to find in Europe. Rooms are small but immaculate, and rather old-fashioned, decor-wise. Some rooms have private bathrooms; others have a sink in the room and share a bath down the hall. St. Regis Hotel

$$$$ | 602 Dunsmuir St., Vancouver, BC, V6B 1Y6, Canada
www.facebook.com/StRegisHotelVancouver

It's the oldest continuously operating hotel in the city, but edgy, modern decor livens up the 1913 boutique property, and Canadian artwork (including in the stairwells) and heritage furnishings gives it a unique sense of place. Rooms and suites come in various shapes, sizes, and configurations (sofa beds and adjoining doors are good family options) because of the building's original architecture. All rooms have plug-and-play gadget panels, in-room safes that accommodate laptops, and more than 200 TV channels. The lower-level front rooms can be noisy: there's a pub below and middle-of-the-night deliveries can be disturbing. You have a choice of bathroom styles—some only have showers, but make no mistake, they're first-class and all have heated bathroom floors and L'Occitane en Provence bath products. Although there are no views, the rates include à la carte breakfast for two and other niceties like passes to Fitness World around the corner. The Gotham Steak House ( 604/605-8282) is a local fave.

Pros

  • Hot location
  • Complimentary global long-distance calling
  • à la carte breakfast for two

Cons

  • No views
  • Slow elevator
  • Front rooms can be noisy
