Fodor's Expert Review Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco & Spa
Rambla República de México 6451, Montevideo, Montevideo, 11500, Uruguay
Originally opened in 1921 as a summer escape for the Uruguayan elite, this stunning Belle Epoque waterfront building, known as the "palace on the sand," underwent an intensive restoration process. The decadent French style, including the original gold detailing and Louis XVI–style armchairs, has been modernized in a way that makes the hotel feel both fresh and grand. Rooms include dark wood furniture, plush beds, and spacious marble baths; those on the front half of the property enjoy views of serene Carrasco Beach. Don't miss lunch or dinner at the hotel's elegant restaurant, 1921, which employs one of Uruguay's best sommeliers.
