4 Best Bars in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and Durban

What's On in Durban, a free bimonthly publication put out by the tourism office and distributed at popular sites, lists upcoming events.

The Chairman

The Chairman is a sophisticated jazz bar (you'll have to dress the part and leave the Durban uniform of tank top and flip-flops in the hotel room) with an achingly cool industrial feel—think upholstered leather seats, exposed brickwork, vases of gorgeous blooms, low lighting, and contemporary art. It's anything but stuffy. This live jazz bar (check the website for new listings) and restaurant attracts a diverse and politically aware crowd—possibly the best place to mingle with a range of Durban's hip, professional set. They encourage reservations, especially for groups of six or more.

Drop Kick Murphy's

A modern take on an Irish pub, this bar, right in the heart of Florida Road's lively center, offers a range of craft beers, signature cocktails, and comfort food like the local classic chicken livers panfried in peri-peri (hot sauce made from bird's eye chili), Philly Chili Steaks, deep-fried chicken wings, and a salad with homemade fish cakes. Happy Hour from 5 to 6 each day offers half-price on drinks and cocktails and 25% off burgers, craft beers, and draughts. A late-night (9:30–midnight) food menu keeps the hungry fed, and friends gather here to watch rugby matches and contribute to the festive atmosphere. Expect loud Irish singing at times.
