The venerable Schauspielhaus has a long history of cutting-edge performances—during World War II it was the only German-language theater in Europe that remained independent. Nowadays its main stage presents finely tuned productions, and experimental works are presented in the Keller (cellar).
During late August and early September the Theaterspektakel takes place, with circus tents housing avant-garde theater and experimental performances on the lawns by the lake.
This concert hall was inaugurated by Brahms in 1895 and is the home of the Zürich Tonhalle Orchestra, which enjoys international acclaim. There are also solo recitals and chamber music programs. The season runs from September through July, and tickets sell out quickly.
